looks like nvidia and ati will have to publish drivers only on windows update :whiste:Great, I'm glad I'm not the only one.
No, as I have posted elsewhere that setting does not *reliably* prevent WU from installing all drivers. It seems to be pretty selective, with some drivers being installed and others not. The example I posted was three drivers; Intel IGPU, mouse and trackpad, all displayed and then promptly installed despite "Never install driver software from Windows Update" being enabled. Others have confirmed this, eg: http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=37598241&postcount=122
Just fresh installed Win 10 on one of my laptops, turned off install driver updates in WU then ran check for update and sure enough it installed AMD graphics and Microsoft mouse drivers without my consent. lol
If you use DDU to uninstall an AMD GPU driver, for instance, by default it prevents Windows from installing more advanced drivers at the next boot. So when you load Windows in normal mode, it stays at the low resolution and Windows never installs any basic driver, not even the basic Microsoft Display Driver or whatever it is called.
I am definitely curious if that route prevents any automatic installations that other disabling routes do not.
this is what I was concerned about. I used the AMD cleanup utility to uninstall radeon drivers which usually will then on restart have the ms basic driver loaded. when i rebooted all i got was display corruption!
ended up having to go into safe mode and the load the .inf of the new amd driver via device manager as the normal installer can't run in safe mode....What a pain in the @** all this auto update BS is causing. Fine for security, but drivers? common MS....
Use DDU, not AMD's utility.
It might work in a slightly different way on fresh boot after using DDU in safe mode.
does DDU originate from Guru3d? never used it but have heard the acronym before.....I wish AMD had a clean install option built in to catalyst like Nvidia drivers have.
