I check Windows Update every other day or so -- I don't let Windows update automatically. I've noticed the last few days that Windows Update now has "Windows 10 is coming soon" with a button "Reserve" as the default. I still click on the "check for updates" and when that finishes it comes right back to "Windows 10 is coming soon". I click on "Show all available updates" and select from that what I want to update.

It seems M$ doesn't want the embarrassment that they had with Windows 8 as not many upgraded to it. Looks like they are trying to get people to upgrade even before they know if it's good or bad.

I don't think I'll jump on 10 -- I'll let the chuckle heads that signup for auto update work out the bugs first...

Not so much as embarrassment but a lot of people don't like to upgrade or change, even now a few won't go to Win10,end of the day you can't force people to upgrade even if the OS is great, offering it free helps entice them.

Personally every new OS has had a few bugs on release ,that includes Win7 or any OS you care to name however they will be fixed in due time, price you pay or in Win10 case don't pay for being at the front of the queue.

.

How do you define good or bad,end of the day preference on OS and any OS takes time to fix bugs etc,Microsoft will release a stable OS in Win10 then work on refinements in areas including bug fixes.

It doesn't Auto Update to Windows 10. If you read the notification it says that it will notify you when it is ready to download and upgrade. You can either upgrade at that point or download it to upgrade later...

Well on my Windows 8.1 this icon was to reserve the update to Windows 10. I have provided by email and once the update is available will automatically be downloaded and updated. According the MS there is a limited period of time when you can upgrade to this version.

For the icon to appear the user must have installed the following update:Windows update dubbed KB3035583

Win7 is basically Vista 2.0 -- Vista was terrible and I mean terrible but Win7 was much better. So, to answer your question: Vista =BAD while Win7 = good. Win10 is about ready to come out and many are using the beta versions but there were beta users of Vista as well. We won't really know how good or bad Win10 is until millions of people have it.

I have not clicked on "reserve" for Win10 so I don't know with certainty what reserving actually means. It could be as some indicate that it just notifies you when it's available OR it could mean, as other indicate, that when it's ready it will automatically update. So, if it's the latter then this will tend to get more people to jump onboard earlier AND before they know if it's Win7 good or Vista bad.

It all derives from KB3035583. I reserved my copy, and got a confirming email, but getting rid of that NA icon was not the real problem for me. KB3035583 created a folder in System32 called GWX. It contained DLLs and EXEs that really had a negative impact on my system. So, after I got the email, I uninstalled KB3035583 and did a CCleaner Registry scrub to get rid of the garbage it left behind. I was then able to get things back to normal, especially the boot cycle.

The next move was to go to Windows Update and HIDE KB3035583 or else it would keep bugging me to be installed. I see no point in downloading a version of Win 10 that is not final and have to do it all over again.

I used Vista from day one without major issues(over two years including beta games testing for companies),Vista had too much UAC nagging and some file transfers was a bit slow ,only things I remember back then, but it was very stable for me,a lot of companies were very lazy getting Vista drivers out the door(remember could not use XP drivers unlike Win7 which had Vista drivers in general to fall back on),also OEM shipping hardware below Vista's minimum recommended specs did not help, throw in FUD and damage was done.

End of the day every OS gets improvements/fixes with time regardless of Windows or Linux,OS in question will always be a preference thing, good and bad is relative to the user in question, take you and I for example ,we already have different viewpoints on Vista and we both have personal experience with Vista.

As to Win10, a lot of users have tried the many builds out there,Microsoft are putting a lot of time and effort into it,game companies will jump on DX12 side.

Again the Vista bad and Win7 good is a very bad anology,I know some people that refuse to go to Win7 from XP, does that make Win7 bad?...Again it's only your view point.

Getting back to Win10 and forgetting about old OS like Win7(remember only five years left to EOL for 7),I think 10 will succeed,I'm not naive to think there won't be no bugs or issues, but then I could say same to you about Win7 on its initial release and that had Vista has a template/guide to work with but still had bugs etc..

Regardless I'll be jumping to Win10 because I like what I have seen and used, and this from a person that has had a very stable Vista,Win7,Win8/8.1,yes me ,what the heck throw my Linux distros in as well(stable too).

We can also thank Vista for pushing 64 bit OS and drivers out the door, yes I know XP had 64 bit OS but it was only from Vista that really pushed the way forward for 64 bit drivers and OS due to Microsoft's policy with Vista and OEMs.

Win10 FAQs here,http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-10-faq?ocid=Reserve_r_Confirmation_mod2_faq

Once you’ve made your reservation, there is no need to check back. A notification on your desktop, similar to what’s shown here, will appear when Windows 10 is ready to be installed (expected to be released on 29 July 2015). Tap or click the notification once it appears, and follow the instructions or schedule your upgrade installation at a time that’s convenient for you.
