Win 2000 server / XP pro ???

Heres My setup I have windows xp pro with two nic cards one to my cable modem and one crossover cable to my server. I have the server setup as a domain controler with win xp as the client joined to the domain.
My networking between the comps works fine, But what I want to do is be able to accsess the internet through the server allso but sence xp is a member of a domain it won't do internet conection shareing. I could route through the server first but I don't want to have to have it running all the time to surf. I am learning networking to be a backup Tech at work.
Do I need a hardware solution ? or can this be done with this setup?
I have tried different TCP/IP configurations, gateway addresses and soforth.

Any input would be appreciated

All you should have to do is set the IP on the same subnet as the main rig, and put the IP of the main rig in for the gateway of the server. Also you will want to do set the dns to the IP of the main rig; regardless of whether the main rig is just a client on the domain.

If you have tried all of that then my only suggestion is to splurge for that 20 dollar router.

Yer tha MAC? Oh my GOD.......... PLEASE, enlighten me as to how you think a WinXP Pro box could POSSIBLY serve up DNS?? This oughtta be good...

Hmm... The topic title says Win 2000 Server, last time I checked, DNS wasn't much of a challenge for Server...

I was letting dhcp handle the one card instead of useing a static ip.

I'm well aware of what server can and cannot do, I've got a whole bunch of them in the room next to me. However...

That's not what he would have this guy do, he'd have him put the IP of the XP box in the DNS settings for the server so that server tries to resolve names via the XP box, which isn't going to happen...

If I don't use the xp box ip address as the default gateway & Preferred DNS server address on the server it won't connect to the internet.

Every network that I've ever built, when it asks for a DNS server address, you give it the address of the DNS server, whether it's yours, or your ISP's, or whoever's... A Pro level OS can't serve DNS, it's not part of the abilities it has (unless you run some type of third party DNS server software -- I have never seen this, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist)...

Look at the topic title! Win 2000 Server can really be a DNS server, unless they've changed it in the last day or two!

John- Read my post three above your last one, and kindly stop repeating yourself. This guy wants to share his ISP connections THROUGH the XP box, NOT the server box. Someone else told him that for the DNS server address ON THE SERVER TO ENTER THE IP ADDRESS OF THE PRO BOX.

This is what I find confusing.



If you don't think I know what a server can and cannot do, perhaps I may suggest that you go and review my trasncripts with Microsoft (MCSE4, MCSE2000, TCP/IP, Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, clustering), or fly up to my office to see what I am responsible for every day??

If the XP Pro box gets a dns request, it goes to it's dns to find it and then sends it back. It works fine because I've done it before when chain linking a few computers together.
