Win 2008 Server & EC2 Cloud problem

First, let me say I hope this belongs here. If not, I apologize in advance.

I don't know if the issues we're having are cloud based or Win 2008 based.

Our files & programs were hosted by a company, which turned out to be a dud. Yesterday, we fired up our own cloud under the supervision of one of Amazon's partners.

We're having an issue with saving files and backing up data from certain programs. We have only put on two users so far, both admins in Windows. One was removed from the user group as a test, but still no go.

Only the original Windows admin has full capabilities. We've tried R clicking on directories and setting permissions to share, still, nothing.

Has anyone encountered this before, and if so, what was the fix? What have we missed? The Amazon partner said the security is right. I say no because the other cloud didn't act this way.

Thanks!
AG

Check the logs on the apps and see if they indicate what kind of error. Common problems:

1. Firewall
2. Permissions
3. Incorrect Windows Roles/Features enabled

Thanks for the reply.

I forgot to say that all errors say users (admins) do not have rights to save/write to a directory (under c. Saving to desktop worked.

Some files default to saving to subs under the c, so I don't get why this is an issue here. It never was anywhere else, even on our in-house server, which is why I wonder if the EC2 cloud automatically set some type of high level security. I can't find it, though, and the Amazon partner said he's never encountered this before.

I'm sure the answer is some crazy simple thing that we're overlooking, but its driving me crazy.

Did you enable the Role, File Services on the server and setup the shares?

Or better yet, are you able to take a snapshot of the server and run it in your own lab to test?

Yes, role, file services, and shares all seem to be in order.

No possibility to run a copy here, though.

As a temp fix, I pointed both users to save all files to the Users\Public\<appropriate folder> until (hopefully) we can figure this out.

I have read this AWS article and also this one, but it seems there is nothing new in either.

Thanks again!

Backup a bit here.

This server has shares and they are either hidden or public. Assuming they are public, net view \\%servername% should list all shares. Confirm you can reach those. Confirm that those users can access them. That should be tested from inside your network to the cloud. If the shares are setup corretly that should work.

Now what apps are talking about and whats the error they get when trying to save? Do the apps see the shares or not? Where are the apps being run from? If the apps are local to you and trying to save to the cloud, it could be a simple DNS issue.

I can see the shares. The C is not shared (cannot get this to change), but public, a folder named shared (setup by me), and a few others are.

The problem is that a couple programs (custom, installed onto the cloud while under admin) want users to save data under their directories. Its fine if I'm in there as admin, but when logging in as any other user, I get flagged saying I don't have the rights.

I can save to the shared folders. Amazon "partner" says he spoke w/AWS tech support, and they claim this is all a problem with 2008 Server. I read that when setting up a cloud in Amazon and choosing Win 2008, it automatically sets you with the highest security. I had a heck of a time tweaking the IE security settings.

All programs are on the cloud, nothing is local.

Something else I remembered - Amazon partner had me d/l and install Windows Security Essentials. Could something be in there?

Thanks for the troubleshooting help. Its been driving me crazy, and I'm not a Win 2008 RT expert. Perhaps its time to pay Amazon techs.
