Win 2k Advanced Server

i've got one of those 180 trials versions of 2k advanced server that i got with the certification program. just curious if there's anyway to get around the trial limits on the software??? any ideas?? thanks

I'm not sure about your question, but I do know that win2k advanced server is a heck of an operation system. Gotta give some props to MS on this one. This thing is a hoss.

So many features packed into a very user friendly OS. You may try the newsgroups for cracks but I do not think anyone could tell you in here how to do it.

I have the full working version, but it's quite massive so I'm not even going to offer it unless you're on a minimum of T-1 !!! Cable has high ping

Btw, what's significant differences are there, if any, between Advanced Server and Professional (which I'm running) ??

I heard AD. Server requires a min. of 256mbs or memory, short of being a memory hog, what else is there ???

I will tell you there IS a (relatively easy) way around the time limit, but I will not tell you any more about it other than. I don't want to condone that activity. But you can find the answer in less than 0.14 second using Google.

Win2k Advanced Server works with 128mb ram. One difference between Pro and Server is that Server had terminal services.

Advanced server is a great operating system. awesome kernel and lots of neat little networking apps built right in. you can use it to configure a box to be pretty much any kind of server you can think of. also the wizards and help actually tell you pertient information unlike the stuff in 9x. too bad it's only a trial

JonJon, you could just buy Win2K Server, rather than Advanced Server. I'm sure you don't have the hardware needed to take advantage of Advanced Server(more than 4 processors or more than 4GB of memory). Win2K Server can do everything Advanced Server can accept for 2-node clustering and 32-node load balancing.

i'm a college student and i really have no need for it other than the fact that i want to play around some of it's functions so i can i learn how it works. i mean the 120day trial isn't a big deal b/c i rarely have the same copy of an os installed for that long anyways i was just curious for the future, that's all

i got the whole evalution package from microsoft couple month ago which include win2k pro, win2k ad server. both include the 120 days timebomb.
however, my system never last that long.

i was force to fromat system again today due to some stpid mistake i did with the scsi/ide/pci tv card driver issue. via 4in1 2.6X did another format c:/s on me last month. hehehe.. v5 5500 driver blow up me pc twice between the via and tvcard.
so for people wanting to learn how pc work, or how win2k work, the 120 day
timebomb isnt that much of big deal. but its nice to know there is a
way to avoid the bomb

ps. i do dual boot therefore, i can load into win98 while looking for solution for win2k.

yeah that's the same case for me drop out, i refromatted again last night but it is nice to know that if i ever have a system run constantly for more than 120 days there won't be a time bomb

from what i've seen it does just about as well as 2k does, it's really not that much different just alot more networking options and services.

3 ways around 120 day trial period:

1. Set the clock back
2. Registry hack (search deja)
3. Buy it!!! If you're affiliated with an educational institution, the academic version is cheaper than retail. Or find a place that sells media and licenses separate, they're cheaper too.

As a sidenote, why bother running Advanced Server? Buy Server. You get all the Active Directory stuff, only thing you miss out on is multi CPU support and clustering. And if you run Server with performance geared toward active instead of background apps, performance difference compared to Pro shouldn't be all that much. Figure 5-10% slower (from what my MS instructor told me). Worth it if you intend on playing around with AD.
