Win 2k Extremely Slow on AMD 64

Hey everyone,

I just purchased a brand new system part by part and assembled it myself; however, when attempting to install Win 2k the installation took hours longer than expected. Furthermore, even after installing SP4 the operating system is performing EXTREMELY slowly. I have no idea where the source of the problem could be. Here are the specifications for the computer. Any suggestions would be much much much appreciated.

Antec 450 Watt Power Supply
1 gb(2x512mb) Mushkin PC3200 Ram
Samsung 120 GB IDE Hard Drive
Sony 16x DVD RW
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
MSI NX6600 GT PCI-E video card
Chaintech VNF4 Ultra Motherboard with PCI-E.

I have no clue what the problem could be but you could try downloading CPU-Z and looking to see if anything is underclocked? how this would happen I don't know, just a suggestion.

why not get xp if i were u i would get windows sp2 since with the a64 it works very well. since i have a bad slow comp i use windows xp sp1

I am guessing that it could be one of these problems:
- Badd HDD
- Incorrectly installed HDD or DVDRW. (Check the master/settings)
- Bad IDE Cable
- Incorrect setting in the BIOS (try resetting it)
- BAD RAM

If you have access to broadband, download one of the linux live cd's and se ehow that runs on your system.

Check the CPU settings, my were set at "Start up" when I first built my system and installed XP. Needless to say things went slow till I set everything up in the Bios properly.

Check the jumper settings on your hard drive. If it has a specific setting for when it's got a data cable all to itself, use it (consistently an issue with Western Digital, but not sure about Samsung). Run Samsung's disk diagnostics if you think it's HDD-related and the jumpering is correct: link to them. Ensure that your drive is on an 80-wire ATA cable too: pic of 80 v. 40

Also, I hope you had a hardware or software firewall installed before you plugged in your network cable, because "raw" Win2000 is a sitting duck for worm attack if you have a live connection to your broadband modem without a firewall and/or a router. A boatload of worms and viruses won't do your performance any favors

I hope you installed the nvidia chipset drivers.

I believe that there is also a "CPU driver" for A64's that could make a difference, but the nVidia nForce drivers are a biggie. You can find the latest version @ nVidia's website

What the fvck is with using win2k?

Lesson to all windows users:
IF YOUR HARDWARE IS > 3 YEARS OLD, FEEL FREE TO USE WIN2K.
IF YOUR HARDWARE IS < 3 YEARS OLD, FOR GOD'S SAKE, USE WINXP.
