i think you have the right idea but are thinking about the wrong source. you should check to see if your video card is suspect, and make sure that the drivers you install are actually installing (my friend had this problem and found out that the via drivers he istalls don't really take effect (i.e. drivers still say microsoft)).

Actually you need to install the Via chipset drivers and the Microsoft/Amd Agp fix and the sp1. try this firs then format and re-install amd do the above mentioned. Also find some working drivers for you video card. I am using 649 or 650 w/0 problems. Hope this helps

I'm having this problem too.. just to test and see if it is in fact the same problem try going to www.shockwave.com see how long you can just set on the page and watch the animations before the computer dies.

New CPU? expensive guess. Go to event manager (see next para if you don't know where that is) and look for your system or application areas to see what is happening and when. Note the time next time it happens and reference this in the event viewer.

Right click on My Computer and select manage. Expand event viewer and here you are.

ok how many of you are overclocked? and by how much? I brought my system down to as close to stock chip speed as possible with a 133mhz FSB so i'm at 933 and not even a hiccup from win2k.

no false alarm this time.. I've been running it for 2 days now

If DrWatson catches it, then check the core dump log to see what caused the crash. It'll tell you if an app made an invalid reference (CPU problem), if memory address was inaccessible (RAM problem), etc. Forgot exact location, just search around in Documents and Settings -> Profiles. The core dump is a pretty big file so just look for the folder that's abnormally big.

It does sound like a video problem, I had the same type of lock ups when I forgot to move the agp divider to 2/3 when I move from a Celeron to a P3. The system would run Office fine but anything graphics intensive it would just lock (even playing videos). Get that AGP hotfix, latest drivers for the card and make sure you didn't do what I did ;^). Also Look at moving your AGP from 4x to 2x. I had that problem at work.

Those are my suggestions
