WIN 2K PRO SHUTDOWN ISSUE

Hi guys
I've recently installed (fresh install) win2k pro in one of my old Pentium III 450 computer (Intel BX Chipset Mobo).
Everything went smoothly until I tried to shutdown the computer. For some weird reason, it didn't shutdown the computer automatically, instead it gave a message "It is now save to turn off your computer".

what can be wrong here?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's been my experience that auto-shutoff when shutting down the OS tends to be a motherboard feature. If you haven't done so already, I would suggest that you look through your BIOS options and try some things. Pay special attention to any settings regarding things that are allowed to wake your system up (LAN, modem, keyboard, etc).

To be fair, though, I'm having the same issue with a Duron 800 system on a Chaintech mobo I bought running WinXP Pro. I haven't done much digging yet, so I don't know what options I have with this mobo.

More than likely WIN2K installed the wrong HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer).

Go to START \ SETTINGS \ CONTROL PANEL \ SYSTEM \ HARDWARE \ DEVICE MANAGER

under COMPUTER, check if it is setup as a STANDARD PC or
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC

If it is setup as a STANDARD PC, that is the problem.


You can try this in DEVICE MANAGER.
Click VIEW \ Show hidden devices

Scroll down to and choose NT/APM Legacy Support
Right-click NT/APM Interface Mode-PROPERTIES and choose Enable Device.

Reboot.

If that does not work or the option is not available you will need to do a
reinstall of WIN2K over the exsisting install, choosing the correct HAL
(at the first blue screen of Windows 2000 setup, where it prompts you to press
F6 if you want to specify additional mass storage devices, press F5 and
Windows Setup will give you a list of options).
