Win 2k server and Win XP standard for workstations work ok?

Does win 2k server work well with Win XP standard on the workstations? Some of our people would probably work better with win XP as opposed to Win 2k standard.

Windows XP is based on the code of Windows 2000. You might even work with a NT4-based domain and have Win9x/NT4/2000/XP/Linux based workstation without too much troubles. W2K server and XP workstation is a very strong mix and is currently the optimal Microsoft-only setup that can be recommended.

I'd have to agree. For testing reasons (I was in IT), at my last job I used Windows XP Pro with our Windows NT environment and later with the Windows 2000 AD test. Both worked just fine. If you think XP would be better for workstations, I'd say go for it.

XP would be better only if

a) very recent hardware is present (P4, USB2, SATA, Firewire, etc)
b) graphist will use these wks
c) security is a concern (considering you're migrating from Win98)
d) you want a rock-solid network
e) all/any these answers

XP would'nt be recommended on

a) less than 128 RAM / wks (i suggest a minimum of 256 cuz you'll use some prog - at least, i hope so!)
b) less than 400mhz CPU
c) less than 6Gb HDD
d) you still use NetBios resolution and need it for DOS programs
e) all these answers and much more

Better make sure u have XP pro and not XP home becasue home no workey with domain authenticating.
That being said, I am running XP pro machines ( all new 1.6Ghz Athlon XP machines, 256mb ddr minimum) on an NT 4 domain (company waay to cheap to upgrade to 2k server) and it runs fine. Would be much better on 2k server running AD as that is now the defacto IT industry reco standard for M$ networking.

I do disagree with hypnotic, you certainly dont need serial ATA (what 5 mobos acutually support it now, usb2 or any of the other stuff, just modern/fast hardware and u will be fine.

PS, dont forget to neuter a lot of the crap in XP. Less headache for you if u admin'ing it.
UPNP, SSDP, Imapi burning, etc.

Just pointing out what MBoy pointed out again. He beat me to it.


XP Home does not allow a number of things such as Domain Authenication, setting file permissions, simle file sharing allowed only, can't set ACLs basically.

When you say XP Standard most people assume you mean Home and not Pro. Pro will allow you to do all the favorite things you can do with 2000.
