win 2k shutdown problems

when i shutdown windows it hangs on the 'it is now safe to turn off your computer' screen....i have to manually reset it every time and then manually turn off the power with the power button.....has anyone experienced similar problems or know of a solution........i am dual booting with me, though i do not think this will matter...could it be video card drivers?

hmm, i have no idea why that is, but just wondering, why you have to reset it and then turn it off? just press the power button and hold there for about 5 secs and the machine should go off right?

If your Win2K has been installed in Standard PC mode (Go check under Device Manager, then click on Computer), then you must enable APM in the BIOS and APM in the Power Options under Control Panel.

If your Win2K has been installed in ACPI mode, there may be a driver or some other device which is blocking off shutdown.

i have the same issue everytime i reinstall win2k on both of my abit boards.
my solution was to go into the control panel , and under power, the advanced tab.
i dont recall what i set but i know it was found there.

Interesting. I have the same problem with my MSI 6163 BX board and W2000 (also dual-booting with ME). Except I also get spontaneous reboots - not welcome at all. This after I flashed the board's BIOS to one that supports W2000 ACPI mode.

I'll try the fix and let you know how it turns out - after I get home from work...

my specs are:
abit bx6 rev 2 board, pIII 450 (stopped oc, thought this might have something to do with it), guillemot xentor tnt2 16, tekram dc390u2w, quantumn atlas IV, Diamond MX300.....
shutdown problem in win2k, though i am also dual booting with me.......thanks for everyone's suggestions, more are obviously welcome

Dude I've run 2K on two diff Abit boards and could never get them to completely shutdown. I tried a million diff things but nothin worked. Strange considering that Win2K beta worked just fine on the two boards.
I think it is something to do with the Abit boards.
I could be wrong(most likely) but I had no problems with Asus boards and Win2K.

Yep, enabling APM worked. Now shuts down on command. I'll have to wait to see if it still shuts down WITHOUT my say so.

Nope, I'm posting this from ME. W2K is still flaky as ever. Incidentally, our common hardware, besides BX motherboards (MSI 6163 for me) is the Diamond MX300, a TNT 2 card (Diamond V770), and Tekram SCSI card (DC-390F UW).

Anyone care to suggest which I should disable first for troubleshooting?

YES! I'm so glad that you started this thread, because I was having the same problems, but I never thought to inquire about it because I figured the on/off switch in my case might be fscked or something. Enabling APM works!

My computer does the same thing too (it doesn't automatically turn off but wait for me to press the switch off).
Enabling APM makes it *reboot* when you shutdown. Weird.

Asus P2B w/ PII-350, newest BIOS.

Had the same problem when I first installed win2000 several months ago. Enabling APM worked for me!

I don't see where to "enable" APM. ---ABIT SE6
When I go to -->start-->settings--->ctrl panel--->PowerOptions
Under the Advanced tab, the only options I see are
1. show an icon prompt or
2. Prompt for pword

also some Power button options.
Do yall mean in the Bios? I do have an option in Bios to enable ACPI, which is enabled. --(Advanced Config. and Power Interface.)

My machine worked great with this pm stuff in 98. All the way down to Hibenate and STR(3). Not W2K. Only will get a lightly suspend by turning off the monitor. It will come back from that. Any other setting will cause a reboot to come back. Forget Hibernate.
