Ok I have a desktop win 7 32 bit using Asrock H97 Fatality motherboard dual core 3.2 cpu 2 gig ram. I use this system to run a home made DVR running Sage TV software. It was coming out of sleep no problem but then all of a sudden it wont come out of sleep anymore. It starts up fans running but just a blank screen. Not sure but it MIGHT have started after a windows update which I thought I had auto updates off but apparently didn't. I tried restoring to before the update but that didn't help. I also made sure I had the latest intel video driver. I use just the built in video part of the intel CPU. So no video card. I have tried running windows update since going back didn't help. I also tried Hibernate and same results it starts up fans running but blank screen.

Any suggestions on what to do next? Since this is a DVR I need it to work with sleep or hibernate so it can wake itself up to record a tv show if iam not home to start it up myself.

Could it be an older power supply that doesn't support modern Intel CPU sleep states?

Is there a bios update for the board?

Maybe there is a bios update I will have to check BUT it was working just fine for over a month. All of a sudden it stopped working. I thought I had windows updates turned OFF but it happened shortly after a windows update. I could have sworn I turned windows auto updates off, I would have bet money on it.

So cant be power supply as this is same power supply I used on old XP system plus it worked on this system for over a month. Its an Antec True power 400 watt or is it 380 watt, one of those. Plenty of power for a dual core with one solid state hard drive and one mechanical drive.

You need to do some research on how current model PSU's are more capable of supporting modern Intel CPU sleep states, as opposed to older model PSU's. In other words: it's not simply a matter of how many Watts of electricity can be output when required, but also the PSU's ability to instantly ramp down to a tiny trickle of power "on demand", for example. What worked on an old XP machine may have degraded over time, and was also never designed for working properly with modern Intel Haswell CPU sleep states.

What's the the point of using sleep or hibernation?

This is a special purpose PC built for one thing only. Using Sage TV software to record TV,, a DVR. Its connected to my LCD flat panel TV. Unless there is a way I can get it to start up from OFF which I didn't think that was possible it has to be in sleep or hibernation. My last PC that I was using only supported hibernation so that's what I used this new build does both so I was using sleep mode with no problems then all of a sudden it stopped waking up.

It no longer wakes up on its own which it did before for over a month and if I manually try to start it up from sleep mode It seems to start BUT screen is blank case fans running CPU fan running but blank screen. . I tried connecting it to a regular computer monitor but that made no difference. Then it stays what looks like running but doesn't respond to say hitting the power button which should put it back to sleep. I have to hold the power button down to kill it then restart. Now if I manually shut computer down and manually restart pc it works fine BUT I want it able to start itself up to record shows when iam not home.

I will try a new motherboard battery and check to see if there is a newer bios. the power supply is not old and is the latest power supply from antec so if I bought a brand new power supply from Antec it would be the exact same one as its a current version.

I use TV PVR capture myself to a designated partition (Most likely to Raid-0 HDD NTFS) either TS, mp4 or mPeg2 video file during a session then re-encode the file to whatever Video Format I want using MeGUI or TMPGenc (VirtualDub is not forgotten AVI Editor).

I also do Screen Capture RAW AVI XviD. Very Nice and suggest you extract the Screen Capture from Camtasia.

I have have no need for MS Hibernation or their stupid BackUp Images, except for HDD Sleep, that doesn't over tax HDD drives containing my personal files, including Boot-able DOS FAT32, 32 GB partitions with GHOST.GHO System Images which can be copied to a DOS Boot-able USB thumb to over-write and restore your system.

I run my hardware platforms 24/7 except for the monthly reboot when weeding though the monthly MS Updates.

I believe your getting HDD Sleep and System Hibernation mixed up.

Bad video card? Have you tried to pull the video card out and re-seat it?
What Video Card - Granted PVR Cards do assign themselves to a fixed IRQ in BIOS but Win can over- ride it.

Perhaps the OP can assign a fixed IRQ for the card in BIOS and work around it but I don't recommend doing this due to driver compatibility in Win.

Sleep mode has always been a pain when it doesn't work. There are just SO many things that have to work just right. I would try a re-install before I started blaming hardware for the issues.

Not that this is the first thing I would try, but drivers, the other possible cause, have been mostly ruled out. The other would be a change in attached devices (either different devices or devices on the way out). Also don't rule out drivers from "other" manufacturers. For example, if you are using an Intel board, and are using a USB input connected to an Asmedia controllers, the device may know how to be waked from sleep, but the Asmedia controller may be having trouble with the command. Your Asrock board seems to have all Intel USB, so this was more of an example than a specific suggestion.

No video card on this system. Using the HD graphics part of the Intel CPU. Have the latest Intel HD Graphics drivers installed also tried the old ones that came with the motherboard. Neither fixed the problem.

I haven't yet had the time to do the update on bios and change out motherboard battery.

OK - did not know you had a built in graphics. Is there the possibility of installing an off the shelf video card so the on board card is disabled?
That happened to one of my old server boards years ago, where the on board video died. I put in another video card and it fixed the problem.

Its not on board video it the intel hd graphics that the CPU does in place of a video card. link to what I mean http://www.intel.com/content/www/us...nology/hd-graphics/hd-graphics-developer.html

BUT yes there is a video card slot in fact this motherboard has 2. I don't have any graphics card I could use.

Updated bios checked settings, tried C6. Still wont come out of sleep. BUT I did see for the first time the mouse cursor when it tried to come out of sleep mode but it was frozen. Computer was I guess locked up.

My next step will be a how to fix a corrupt win 7 from pc world http://www.pcworld.com/article/243190/how_to_repair_a_corrupt_windows_7_installation.html

I think what caused this mess is when windows ran an auto update on me which I thought I had turned off.

Worst case I start over completely with a fresh install if the above procedure w doesn't work either. I only run one program on this PC Sage TV. BUT its a pain to re-setup sage tv.
