Win 7 64-bit & Gaming?

Hi All,

I'm getting ready to build a new rig. It is mostly used for mundane tasks, but I like to play FPS games when I get the chance. I'm really happy with my WinXP setup and it runs all the games that I like to play, so I haven't made the move to Win 7 except for a dual-boot install (64-bit) that I jump into occasionally.

I haven't taken the time to install any games in my Win 7 install, so I thought I would get opinions and observations from everyone here. How does gaming work in Win7 64-bit? Are there games that work and those that don't?

Thanks.

Paging AdamK47 . . .

I don't think you'll have any problems with 99.99% of games in Windows 7 64. There's a few recent titles that are hopefully broken, at least, I could never get them to work. Fallout 3, for example. But, others have it running fine.

Fallout 3 ran fine for me on Win7 Pro x64. I use Win7 Home x64 and all games I['ve tried run fine from Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura to Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

No problems playing recent (within the last 5 years or so) games on W7, but legacy ones definitely have issues even when you run them on compatibility mode. Still Life is one that did not work.

Another Win 7 64 bit user here.
Some older games might require some work. But I have not had anything that I could not get to work.
No issues at all with newer games so far.
Win 7 looks like the first OS where 64 bit takes off. (Look at the steam statistics) so I do not expect any issues with games that are not yet released.

Been running Windows 7 x64 for close to a year now. Can't recall a single game failing to work. Including many hours of Fallout 3.

The only problem with gaming I know of with Windows 7 64-Bit concerns only one single game, namely Sacred 2, it is known (for the majority of the game's owners, according to what I had read on the devs' forums) to need to run under Windows XP/Vista compatibility mode under Windows 7 to run properly (or to run at all in some cases), but other than that I've never experienced a single problem with Windows 7 64-Bit when I was on the trial a few months ago, on which I installed a good 40+ games and launched them all (and played most of them too) without problems, but I'm back with Vista now.

Only games that don't work on Windows 7 x64 are games that don't work on 64-bit systems and games that don't work on Windows 7.

Other than that... pretty much all of them work nicely. If you have over 4GBs of ram it's kinda required anyway you have x64. :/

No problems with any of my 200+ games and I have some real old ones ie over 10 years, infact I can even run very old 16 bit Dos games via Dosbox on Win7 x64.

Most games work fine. I am part of the group that had many problems with fallout 3. While i struggled through them because i just wanted to play the game. Its gonna leave a nasty stigma though if i ever wanna go back and replay it. Same thing with oblivion, made by same Dev.

Cant say i've had problems with any other game though.

I played both Fallout 3 and Oblivion right to the end ,infact even Morrowind on Win7 x64 with no isssues at all.

I'm replaying Drakensang at moment on Win7 x64.

Btw I do keep my DX9.0c updated on Win7 to latest version ie (June 2010 build ) for my old DX9 games.

I ran things from Diablo 2 with a Glide wrapper and Baldur's Gate to the most recent games without problems. Sometimes it took a bit of work to have a game work properly (mostly the old ones), but in the end not even one failed to run.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

and im happy for you, but doing a simple google search will get you lots of results from random crashing to micro-stutter's. And i dont feel like making the effort to change .ini files(notice how i put "I did not want to make the effort") I have a ton more games that do in fact work flawlessly in Win7. Currently jumped on the F2p Lotro. hopefully it lasts longer than a week(me not them)

my list would exceed a page of games that work on Win7, at least 50 games.

Disappointed that ive had such trouble, when given so much success from all the others

You can google crashes, problems for any game if you look long enough on the net for ANY OS or game, point is it can be other issues ie overclocked cards or faulty hardware, specific drivers, game bugs ,user error ,I knew one guy that posted in these forums because he could not get The Witcher demo to run on his PC ( he had outdated DX9.0c on his PC)you see my point.

The only game I've tried that I couldn't get to work no matter what I tried on W7 x64 is Dungeon Keeper 2. Of course, I haven't been able to get it to run since my Win98 machine died, and I moved to XP. I got to play it for about a month. 9 years ago.

@Mem

yeah im aware of all that. Unfortunately its widespread.
i actually tried to overclock, but my rig had a negative affect. games seemed to run worse.

back to the OP, Win7 is perfect for gaming, its time everyone got past Winxp. It would allow dev's to focus more on the mainstream again.

Hmm I'll have to test this when I get home, have not installed it on the new computer but I had it working (kinda) on xp 64.

Have been using Win7 Pro 64bit for a year now and it's working great. No problems with my games, old or new ones.

I have been using Windows 7 64-bit since it was released and have had ZERO issues with it and games. I have approx 20 games on Steam and all run perfectly.

Botttom Line:
SkyDiver, go ahead and take the plunge for Win 7 64-bit. You won't be sad you did...
