Win XP and IE6

i heard some rumors about microsoft being able to track whether or not the copy of XP you are running was legit through IE6, the one thats preloaded on there.. is there any truth to this?

my friend said he heard someone ran a they got off the net and a pop-up screen came up that gave him a warning to get a license.

i'm still runnin trusty ole' win2k... is there much point in upgrading? i usually wait out the initial hype and let all you folks work out the bugs....

Smokey... he was probably talking about activation.

No they cannot go into your computer and check if your copy is legit. All you do during activation is send your name, product key, product id & hardware code (which Windows generates during installation when it detects hardware). This does mean that MS can go into your computer and look at your files and shut down your system. If you do not activate within 20 (or 30, i keep forgetting) days then MS will not let you go into Windows w/o activation. Again this is not Microsoft remotely telling you to do this... this is the timecode build into Windows XP. Most computers will not even have this problem as the activation is bios locked and happends like that. Just the people buying from small resellers (like me) or buy it themselves will run into activation (and the people downloading copies )

Also people can rename their computers to MICROSOFT and send a message via the built in NT messaging queue.... just go into the command prompt of Windows 2000/XP and type in net send <ip address> <message>

Might have been someone pulling a prank.
