Win XP crashes on shutdown

WinXP Pro begins the shut down process but it locks up at the your computer is shutting down screen. I have to push the restart button and then the power button to shut down the computer. This is kind of annoying and I know there's probably something I could do to easily fix this. Anyone got a suggestion?

How much ram do you have installed in this OS and have you made any changes to the default setups (security & such)?

512MB Corsair XMS pc 3200 (not OC'ed)

Yeah, I probably changed security settings in the 7 months I've been using it (only started having this problem half a month ago)

Well, make sure your Local Security settings aren't set up to clear the virtual memory pagefile as this can take quite a while. Start>Run>secpol.msc should get you there. The setting is located in Local Policies>Security Options.

Also, anything showing up in the Event Viewer under the system or application sections?

Do you have a dial up modem installed? These can cause issues on hanging at shutdown with Windows XP....partciularly V.90 modems.

Also, do you have all the latest windows updates installed?

No, my computer does not have a modem installed

clear virtual memory pagefile = disabled by default on my computer.

I'll keep digging around....this problem really has me baffled...
