Win XP doesn't recognize 2nd hard drive (BIOS does)

I have two hard drives on my system. The primary drive was divided into three partitions (so is the secondary drive. Primary drive is setup as IDE ""0 " and secondary as IDE "1"

The primary drive (IBM DESKSTAR) recently failed and I replaced it with a Seagate and reinstalled XP on the new drive.

Both drives show up in the BIOS and in the hardware management section of Windows, but the 2nd hard drive does not show up in windows explorer, or on "my computer"

Jumper on the primary is set to "master" and the secondary drive jumper is set to "slave"

Suggestions?

Thanks

Did you create a valid partition under drive management for the new Seagate? If not, you won't have a drive in the explorer. Make sure you have adequate power too because new drives tend to be a lot more power sucking than old ones.

I created 3 partitions on the new Seagate (just as I had 3 on the Deskstar) - The Seagate is IDE 0 and the OS are installed on that drive.

The 2nd drive is a Maxtor, and was also divided into 3 partitions...it contains most of my data.
The Maxtor is the one that shows up in BIOS and on hardware manager, but not on "My Computer"

Any other ideas?

Although both drives are already partitioned and formatted, the Maxtor (disk 1) doesn't appear in the "disk management" section.

ensure that the jumpers are correct on the second drive.

ensure that its enabled in bios to appear and is not disables as in the controller.

check the stupid small things, its something simple.

It isn't the jumpers, I'm certain of that. Really strange. Re-reading my OP, my terminology was incorrect. The new drive is the Master on the primary channel, the other drive is the slave on the primary channel.

I wonder if there is a conflict with Maxtor and Seagate on the same channel?

To manage new disks
Open Computer Management (Local).
On the Action menu, click Rescan Disks.
Notes

To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
In the console tree, click Disk Management.
Where?

Computer Management (Local)
Storage
Disk Management

You must be logged on as a computer administrator in order to complete this procedure.
If Disk Management does not detect the new disk after you click Rescan Disks, you might need to restart your computer.
New disks are added to the computer as basic disks.

Right-Click on the words DISK 1 and choose Initialize Drive
To the right of that, Right-click where it says your disk drive (37.25 GB)
choose New Partition a window should appear, choose the letter of your new drive (D)
and format it.

Once Finished Formatting you should reboot and it should now appear under "My Computer"

If the device doesn't even show up in disk management, there's a hardware configuration issue. Maxtor drives often have oddball jumper settings and vary from model to model. Check with Maxtor's site on that model and make sure you have the correct jumper settings. Also try using cable select mode as some controllers don't like it if you manually assign the drive position. Odd but I've seen it happen.

bad connection from the power supply or bad IDE cable, replace the IDE cable and try a different molex connector, if it continues you need a new power supply

More info...

I set the Maxtor to cable select, and put the attached it to Master connection on the primary channel.

I disconnected the new seagate from the system.

The Maxtor appears in the BIOS as primary master.

I booted using the Windows XP disc to see if I could run setup on the drive..

When I ran Windows setup on the drive...it found it, but indicated that it could not access it.

So, I reconnected the Seagate to Primary Master, put the Maxtor on Primary slave.

The BIOS identifies the Maxtor. The Maxtor also appears in "Device Manager" but that's it. Can't see it in "My Computer" or in Windows Explorer.

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions, ideas you can share.

Thanks

Hi,

i have seen this problem before, albeit in a laptop. It turned out to be a setting in BIOS to 'lock' the harddrive or activate a hidden partition. I had a similar problem where Windows setup says can't get a lock on the drive. Recheck your BIOS setting, try to put the Maxtor on secondary channel master, or maybe update your BIOS so that you can see the option...

Or even better try it on another machine.

I tried putting the Maxtor on the Secondary Channel Master....no luck....

I'll dig into the BIOS settings some more.

I'm wondering if the drive is bad.
