win xp file corruption and format

well just had massive file corruption not sure if it was a virus or not but got progressivly worse after each boot. need some help with trying to format my hard drive (erase completely!) and start over. I have tried several times to reinstall using the win xp cd and a win 98 boot disk but no luck

I think maby my hd may be messed up (heads or file system?)

I get the message of "file setupdd.sys could not be loaded the error code is 7" now after doing fdisk. I don't think my xp cd is scrached but if it is what are the chanced microsoft will replace it. It's OEM btw.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and could save a computers life (epox 8kha+, 1.4 tbird)!!

Well I have scaned all the other format forums here and nothing has fixed my problems tried fdisk , format /mbr, sys c:, can't seem to get ext to retrieve a file from my xp cd.

The problem still seems to be a missing setupdd.sys file any one ever hear of it? and this error code 7 makes no sense. I looked on the windows support but error code 7 does not talk about any .sys file.

DESPERATION!!!!!! Please help!!!!

it sounds like your hard drive might be physically damaged; if you can't run Fdisk (off the win98 boot disk?), then that's a problem. do you have any diagnostic utils you can run from the boot disk? you might want to check the hard drive vendor's website, if you can get to it from another computer; a lot of the biggies like Western Digital and Maxtor have software you can download that will examine the entire drive and let you know what's going on.
