I'm running Win XP Pro. Today I bought a Hi-Val PCI dialup modem (model H56IP-00R) as a backup to my cable modem, and spent more than eight hours trying to get it to work.
By the time I had resolved a heap of problems and uninstalled and reinstalled drivers from the Win XP database, the CD that came with the modem card, the Agere website (they made the modem board chipset), and the Hi-Val website, I still had one unresolvable issue. The Port that the modem is attached to could not be opened. Possible Hardware Conflict.
The Device Manager seemed to think everything was working, including the modem. But finally a help topic directed me to system information ->hardware resources ->conflicts/sharing.
There I found the following:
Memory Address 0xE6000000-0xE6FFFFFF PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
Memory Address 0xE6000000-0xE6FFFFFF Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem
AND
I/O Port 0x0000C000-0x0000CFFF PCI standard PCI-to-PCI bridge
I/O Port 0x0000C000-0x0000CFFF Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem
So I can take a wild guess why the port wouldn't open. My biggest question is: what do I change the current settings to? I have enough understanding of a hard drive to know what a memory address range signifies. What I don't know is how to determine what settings I can change to end the conflict without causing my system to become unstable, or hardware or applications to stop working. Where do I go from here? I was ready to exchange the modem card for a different brand tomorrow in the hopes that it would install without all these problems. I've never spent nine hours trying to make a new PCI or AGP card work. Its normally a ten minute job, or maybe longer if I have to go to a website and d/l an updated driver to replace the one that came in the box.
Please help! I'd like to think that I didn't waste nine hours of debugging just to have to give up.
Forget it. I traded the Hi-Val modem in this morning for a Best Data modem, and the new modem installed and started working in little more than five minutes.
