Win XP Home - CDRW not working

I put together a low budget system which includes:

Soyo P4VGM motherboard
Celeron 2.8 socket 478 processor (I now understand this was a poor choice, so please don't laugh too hard)
1 stick 256M Centron PC2700 (Motherboard runs it at 2100)
80 gig Samsung 7200 rpm hard drive (2mb buffer) - Set as primary IDE master
IDE5232 CDRW (Top Glory Electronics) - Set as secondary IDE master
2.5" Floppy drive
Windows XP Home - OEM 2002 version - Also Installed all updates from Microsoft
Norton Antivirus 2000 Pro (Downloaded from Symantec)


I installed Windows XP home using the CDRW. After installing and updating XP, Windows cannot play an audio CD, and it takes about a minute to just to show the contents of a data CD.

I have:

Confirmed that the IDE cable is correctly attached
Made sure the power connector is adequate (I switched it to the hard drive and it worked fine)
Uninstalled and reinstalled the CDRW
Replaced the IDE cable
Installed the CDRW in another machine (running XP home) to make sure it was working properly
Disconnected and reconnected the floppy drive
Looked at everything in the BIOS setup I could find

I have not tried connecting the CDRW on the primary IDE as a slave (Hadn't thought of it until now). If that worked, would it significantly effect the performance of the CDRW?

I'm assuming that there is a problem in Windows XP, as the CDRW worked fine to install Windows. Any other suggestions before I try reinstalling Windows?

does the cd drive have an audio cable between the drive and the sound card input?

Making the CDRW Primary slave will not significantly reduce its performance unless you are doing a lot of hard drive intensive stuff while using it at the same time. Even then it should theoretically work fine.

Also, I assume your hard drive is set up as master on the other Primary IDE. In other words, you are not using Cable Select (CS) on one IDE, and Master/Slave on the other Secondary. I have heard this can be an issue.

Yes it does. It's an analog audio cable.

I broke down and just bought another drive (different model) this evening. It installed and worked fine. The one I was having a problem with won't work in the other systems I have now either. So it might have been the drive.

I had not thought about the jumper settings being mixed between CS and master/slave on the two IDE channels. I did have the hard drive connected as the primary master with the jumper set to master and the CDRW connected as the secondary master with the jumoer set to CS. I'll try changing that on another machine.
