Win XP is not detecting CD drives

I did a fresh install of Windows XP and suddenly the OS does not show one of my drives, and the other drive gives an error everytime I try to open any cd. I just completed another fresh install of XP to see that the same problem is there. Any ideas what is going on? Thanks for the help...

What type of motherboard do you have? If it is a non-Intel board, did you install the chipset drivers? If it is a Nvidia chipset, you may have a problem with the chipset's IDE drivers. When the Nvidia chipset drivers are installed, the computer asks if you want to install the chipset IDE drivers. If you have the Nvidia chipset and have installed the drivers, you may have to say NO at this prompt to stay with the Microsoft IDE drivers.

I made absolutely no hardware changes. I have a Intel Soyo mobo and I have never had to install any drivers for it. This just happened out of nowhere and I seriously have no clue what is wrong.

Are the CD drives on an add-on PCI IDE card?

If so, you may have to load the drivers for that card.

It is not a driver issue. Both of the drives were purchased within the past few months. Windows XP detected them with no problem when I just plugged them in. I'm very .

We aren't talking about drivers for the CD drives themselves. We are talking about drivers for the motherboard and its chipset. What Soyo motherboard are you running?
