Windows loads and gets stuck only showing my desktop picture. No icons, no bars. The only thing I can do is to get windows task manager up. I can log out and when I log back in everything works fine. Any help?

Did you just do updates or anything? What about spyware or viruses? I recently dealt with a machine like this and ended up formatting it.

I am usually pretty good about keeping spyware and viruses off my computer. but it could happen. It does kin of seem like that is the case. I have adaware and it doesn't detect anything. I did just do some update for windows a couple days ago. I have sp2 already and that worked fine. I think it was a security update for office and window that I installed a couple of days ago. I was thinking I was going to have to reformat.

Run MPS Reports (see the URL in my .sig) and then when it finishes running, open up the Startup.txt file, and tell me what's under the following keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce

(anything else in there?)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Userinit REG_SZ C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,

(Is there anything else after "userinit.exe," in the above key on your PC?)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

(What's after that key?)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Runonce

(What's after that key?)

If you boot in safe mode, does anything change?

I have never had virus protection software. I ran an online one from trendmicro. It fixed the problem temporaily, but now it is back. When I boot in safe mode it windows boots correctly. Maybe I should get a hold of some better antivirus software and that might clear all the infected stuff in my computer.

I have another question in my windows directory there are a bunch of folders that are faded and have names like $NtUninstallKB821557$ what are these. Are these uninstall files for windows update? and do I need them? They are starting to take up a lot of space and my windows directory is 3.14 gb. Thanks for your help

Keep the uninstall directories; those are good.

The problem goes away in safe mode, so there's a driver that's running in normal mode (and not in safe mode) that's causing this problem. You can troubleshoot by using MSCONFIG (start/run/MSCONFIG) to turn off all non-Microsoft services, and see if the problem goes away. If not, you can start disabling devices and see if the problem goes away. If not, you can uninstall software until the problem goes away.

This is the easiest thing to fix because 1) it's fine in safe mode and 2) you know immediately if you've fixed it or not.

Let me know if you need more help.

Sounds like your profile got corrupt.

Go to Safe Mode, create a new user, reboot. Upon reboot, (I believe) hold down the shift key as this bypasses any startup tasks. This should bring you up to a sign-on screen, if it doesn't, you need to find a way to get to the sign-on screen (press CTL-ALT-DEL several times at the blank screen?). Log on as the new user.

If you've made this user an administrator, you'll be able to get to your old profile by drilling to it (C:\Documents and Settings\Old User Name). That should enable you to dig out any documents, e-mail stores......

Good luck.

If all else fails, boot up with a Bart's PE disk - Bart's PE page - and copy the data over to another hard drive.
