Win XP Locksup randomly

Seen a couple threads with similar topics, but not quite exactly what I'm experiencing.

My computer will randomly lockup. Generally it's when I have some sort of program open. eg. Winamp with word, or win media player, or games. If my computer is just sitting idling it won't lock up unless I have a screensaver going. Only thing I can find in common between all of these is sound. Maybe video, but winamp doesn't use video and screensaver doesn't have sound! In any case It just freezes... Sometimes the sound is repeating as in most lockups, sometimes not. Sometimes the computer shows a bluescreen for a split second and then reboots automatically not giving me a chance to read it. Help someone? D=

did you change something recently or is this a new system?

turn off automatic reboot and tell us if there is a blue screen error when it locks up (control panel > system > advanced > startup and recovery >settings > automatically reset)

what are the temps you are seeing? run motherboard monitor

test the memory memtest86 3.0

gives me IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL_TO. I'm guessing IRQ conflict ;-) In any case... Any idea how I can remedy this? and where to start?

the mobo monitor link doesn't work and I ran the mem tester and it didn't return any errors.

The system isn't really new... had it for about 6 mo. now... but I've been having this problem since I got a new motherboard and soundcard =\ Basically spent hundreds of dollars upgrading thinking it was my old soundcard, video card, ram, etc. still does it tho =\

you might have to change the acpi to standard pc to take over irq assignments if you can't manually change them

Well... I did the standard pc install and look at IRQ stuff but nothing there... I went back in installed a previous FINAL version instead of the latest Beta version of my chipset drivers. That seemed to help alot... I no longer freeze every like 30min - 2 hours of game play... but occasionally it still locks... very occasionally... like 20+hours of continuous on-time. Dunno if that's attributed to something else, maybe overheating, but I have a big box fan pointed at my open case! =\ hehe... which doesn't seem to affect it either way, but I leave it there for the helll of it... I can live with this for now... but kinda wanna figure out why my computer isn't as stable as a POS 400mhz Compaq Presario...

I have the same problem as you.. constant blue screens. My computer ran perfect with windows 2000, but when i upgraded to windows XP i would get blue screens. So i reformatted and did a fresh windows XP install and i get the same problem. seems to happen mostly if im running Winamp with other programs (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, MS Word, IE6) but even with winamp closed it still happens wether im doing something or the computer is idleing. I have all current windows hotfixes applied, and i run up-to-date norton AV 2002, so i dont have any viruses. Also i tried disabling virus scan to see if that was the problem, but it still kept happening. I really hope there is some way to fix this cause id really hate to have to go through all the work of moving my computer back down to windows 2000

my processor temp is like around 110f usually so im not overheating
