Win XP Pro (OEM) $141.50 ?

Hi, I am going to build a new system and run XP. GoogleGear sells XP Pro (OEM) with any HW for $141.50.

Just want to make sure the 'full' OEM version is as functional as the full retail, and I am paying the right price.

If I want to upgrade later, can I get an upgrade price from this OEM package ? Or I have to have a full version to qualify the upgrade price ?

( I am not a student and don't have any academic connection. Neither do I own a previous version of Windows. )

too bad microsoft isn't selling it for $40 anymore. $140 for a full version doesn't sound like a bad deal if you need it now.

OEM isnt missing aything at all, it is just like the retail. Nothing different at all.
You wont need to upgrade in the future to the retail version because you would just be blowing your money.

You can get a package deal at www.mwave.com that inlcudes Windows-XP Pro and Microsoft Plus! for Windows XP for like $140.

The OEM copy of windows is tied to the hardware you buy it with and cannot be "legally" transferred. If you bought a new PC and it came with windows, you could not sell that machine and install that copy of windows on another machine at a later time. With a retail copy you can do this. That is the difference.

Now, the OEM copy is tied to the hardware it is purchased with (you must purchase it with some hardware, otherwise your seller is breaking MS's rules) - so, technically you could but a cpu, harddisk, etc. (some say even a single screw) with your OEM copy and use it with that no problem. It's never been (and unlikely to be I imagine) tested in a court of law as far as I can tell so I'm sure you'll be alright.

I've sent an email to GoogleGear service asking if I am qualified for OEM XP by purchasing the following HW:

CPU
Motherboard
Memory

I know it's illegal (or impossible?) to install two systems with one OEM copy.
However, is there any way to 'deactivate' an installation on the 'old' box and install the OEM XP on a 'new' box ?
I.e. is it legal to 'migrate' the OEM XP to another system, as long as I don't use the original system ?

For example, let's say I bought a new system with OEM XP. Later, I decide to use the new system for Linux and
use another box for XP, can I install the OEM XP to another box ?

Been here. I started with an OEM version of XP Pro. There is one slight difference: You are limited on the number of times you can activate the OEM version. It was the 3rd or 4th time I tried to activate the software (due to re-installing on the same hardware and numerous hardware upgrades). The software would not activate via internet and I was directed to telephone MS. The rep finally explained the limitations of an OEM copy (designed to be distributed on a complete system that would have limited upgrades).

So, if you think you might want to activate the OS several times, I'd suggest a full version. If you are not constantly rebuilding your computer, OEM will be fine.

From the nature of your questions it seems like maybe you don't really need XP Pro, but rather XP Home, which can be had for around $90. Well, only you know for sure what you need but Pro is designed for serious networking whereas Home is for more of a home use/networking need.
