Win XP problem (System process)

Hi!

I'm trying to fix a computer (Athlon 1600+, 384MB RAM) for a friend. The problem is that it is VERY slow. I've corrected some of the problems (two virus checkers installed, two firewalls installed and a lot of unneccesary services running), but there is one big problem left: The System process is always at 25-35% CPU time, even when the computer is idle.

I've not found any spyware on the machine, and no viruses. Any suggestions on how to get the System process down?

Did you try running MSconfig and disable all unnecessary programs from loading at startup?

System is a kernel process, if it's causing problems it's usually doing it on behalf of a sh!tty driver.
