I have a Windows XP professional upgrade lying around, which I was planing on using. The target machiene is an old Coppermine 733, and only has 128mb of Rambus pc600. I've heard that a minimum of 256 mb of RAM should be had before using Win XP. What are your thoughts?

I have it running on 3 laptops that have 128MB of SDRAM, it's certainly not a very fast way of running it but it works okay for office/browsing the web.

EDIT: SDRAM

Yeah, if you are planning on using it for internet browsing, email, then 128 should be enough. Once you start using apps like Photoshop or Office, then I would suggest you get another 128 for 256 total memory. Otherwise, it'll be slow slow slow.

Wow! Coppermine + Rambus! Do you have an i820 chipset motherboard by any chance?
I thought those were pratically extinct.

The start up would be something like this.

Turn it on, go to lunch, come back, should be done loading.

Ummm no. I used WinXP on a PIII 500 (Katamai core) with 128MB of PC100 SDRAM. Was it fast? No. Was it usable for web browsing/email/office. Yep. Probably only took 45 seconds to a minute to boot up too.

That's about my experience too, if you want to be fair your post should read "If you want to start Premiere; Turn it on, go to lunch...."

I'd recommend putting win2k on it. Winxp is too much of a ram hog. 128 is the minimum, recommended is at least 256. 2000! Xp sucks!

i love XP, i put it on my wifes computer a while ago (before she got her new 2600+ monster) it was a PII 350 with 128MB, ran just like WinME always did, maybe jsut a SLIGHT bit slower, would even run Wolfenstein: enemy territory, would jsut take a while to load those huge maps, but once up, it ran liek a champ, like 50FPS, win XP wont hurt that 700 one bit

there are some tricks to getting xp to run better with less resources. you should shut down any unneeded services. go into your sys prefs and put your performance settings on "adjusted for best performance". next drop the cache in ie down to 20mbs. keep you temp files clean and your recycling bin empty. this should *help* things as best as possible, but xp is still going to be slow. don't plan on running much at a time on it and you can plan on avoiding any apps made by adobe (other then acrobat reader).

for a better windows XPerence (pun intended) either get more ram or use Win2000.

You maybe at the desktop in 45 seconds, but if you watched the hard drive light, which would be showing you any further activity, it would probably take 2-5 minutes to finish all the stuff that windows loads, and have no more activity on the hard drive. Trying to do anything useful during this period just slows things down even more. More ram aleviates some of this.
According to a chart I saw, you can supposedly load XP on the smallest minimum P133 and I think it was 64 meg of ram. So you can run it on just about anything. Whether you will enjoy the experience is for you to decide.

How did you get Wolfenstein:ET to run so good on that machine? My brother got my old 1Ghz PIII with a Radeon 7200 and we had to turn all the video settings to the lowest so that he could play it. On a 350 it had to crawl.
