Win2000 File Sharing

I have Windows 2000 SP2.

I am trying to setup up file sharing on a LAN. Whenever someone accesses my computer it comes up with a dialog asking for a password for resource: \\Eddie\IPC$

I have tried every password I can think of that I use and none will work. I dont even want a password setup.


Any ideas?

If people are going to insist on using 2K, then they HAVE to deal with passwords and user authentication...

I still say that alot of noobs to NT/2K don't really realize that, based on the TONS of posts here and at the OS forum on this same "password" issue. To make your 2K at least somewhat secure, you should have some user account (aside from the default "Administrator" account) setup to have access to your own shares, and then that username/password info would need to be given to people trying to connect to those shares from a 9x/ME machine... OR... Those people on the remote machines can be given their own accounts on your 2K and those accounts are given access to the share, so they can connect using that.

I know that I have seen some suggestions here that say that you can allow people to use the "guest" account, but then "guest" will still need to be configured to have access to your shares on the local machine before a remote machine can use it to gain access.

The simple way: Go to control panel, computer management, users and groups, enable the guest account, give it a password.
Then when you try to access the shares and it gives you a PW prompt, give em the password for your guest account!
