I say go for it! I made the move to Win2k a few months ago and I haven't missed a thing. One thing you should do is a fresh install, none of the upgrade over 98 stuff! Good luck.

clean install definatly better...
if your lazy like me, and don't wanna download updated drivers for like old scanners and stuff like that then you need to keep 98 or me.

Thanks for everyones help and advice, but know I have a problem:

OK, I did a clean install of w2k and formatted using NTFS.

After installing drivers for my hardware I installed w2k SP1, after that I ran the updates and installed Internet Explorer SP1.

Now, when w2k shuts down, rather than powering off it will sit at a black screen with a cursor in the upper left. It will also do it when I select restart. I have to manually turn the power off or hit the reset switch.

Any ideas on how I can fix this.

My HDD is a Maxtor Diamondmax plus 5120 (UDMA/ATA/66 7200rpm), should I use the driver w2k installs (Via driver) or should I install Abit's (Highpoint driver) UDMA/ATA/66 driver?

OK 1 problem down 1 to go: I figured out the problem with the shutdown. My CDRW installs Adaptec DirectCD, which is not W2K compliant until you download the patch from Roxio now it is OK.

As for the other: My HDD is a Maxtor Diamondmax plus 5120 (UDMA/ATA/66 7200rpm), should I use the driver w2k installs (Via driver) or should I install Abit's (Highpoint driver) UDMA/ATA/66 driver?

If you never played with Win NT or Win2k before, I recommend a beginners book, like one of those Win2k for Dummies, the one for Linux helped me out when I had no clue on what to do. You are on the right track to get all the new drivers.

Good Luck,

Jim

Hey vfrjim, when I read your post I had to laugh because I got so pissed off today trying to figure out how to make a simple bootdisk that I went out and bought a beginners book about W2K and how to do things. Thanks

and Thanks for everyones input and help.

Just FYI, there is no bootdisk option like in Win9x. In NT you can make them maually, but I can't remember if you can in Win2k because I've never had to make one. That should tell you something about stability. As for the driver thing it depends, if your drive is on the ATA100 controller on your KT7 then u will need the highpoint driver, if it's just on the normal controller then just slap on the VIA ones.

You can run a command off the cd to create the bootdisks, but I forget which command. I made my bootdisks by downloading them off www.bootdisk.com. You'll need four freaking disks...

After you are done installing your programs, I recommend using that backup feature (including the registry) if you have enough space on a separate partition... it might come in handy...
