I work at a college and we are upgrading all of our systems to win2k. But I have a professor that will not move away from this crapy old 16 bit dos app. Does anybody know of a way to make 16 bit apps work with win2k or do I just go out and try to find a new app for this person...

Thanks for your help...

have u tried the app to see if it works under 2k? If it's just something simple it may run. But any app that requires the use of hardware (ie - sound, video, etc) will not have those functions and may not work for that reason.

If the app doesn't work, i don't know of anything or way that would help you. I'm sure there's gotta be a way though.

I don't think it can be done. What you could do is search download.com and see if there's an emulator for 16 bit applications.

<< He can boot with a DOS floppy whenever he likes. >>

That may work, but what if the app needs to access data on the hard disk? If the drives are formatted in NTFS this won't work. You won't be able to read/write to anything. There is NTFS DOS, but u don't wanna give him that and it's probably best not to use FAT 32 so u can lock things down using the NTFS permissions.

EDIT: If the program can infact be run from a dos floppy then i suppose you could partition a fat 16 or 32 section of the hard drive for use with that app. There would be no security on anything in this partition however.

or

What if the app was run remotely? You could handle the app itself from a 98 machine, or whatever it takes to run, then the drive could be mapped and he'd be able to use it remotely in 2k. I can't see why running it off a 98 machien from 2k wouldn't work. This way, u'd also be able to secure the machine yourself and everyone would still be using 2k.

Ha, who'd ever think a 98 machine would serve to NT!

<< running a win98 server would be fun is a sick ironic kind of way >>

If u want to make it even more fun, you COULD run it off 95... we're not talkin revision B either. The original 95! You'd be in there everyday rebooting

If you're looking for any third party software to lock down win9x, try Fortress. We use it on our workstations at work and it locks down pretty damn tight.
