Hi, I've got an smc 4 port router hooking up 3 win2k and 1 apple g4 to the net. I've got the network running between the 3 windows machines, with file sharing and the whole bit.. but there doens't seem to be a way to get the g4 to do the same with the other machines. I tried out dave, but I can't afford the software right now, so is there a free solution? thanks

Since the 2 OS's cant talk, install a program called Dave made by Thursby which will allow you to communicate via TCP/IP between them.

<< you could run linuxppc and enable samba >>

He's joking. Ignore it.

I know of no free way to do cross-platform file and printer sharing. DAVE is about your only hope here. Or PCMACLan, but that's more expensive than DAVE. I went through the same trouble trying to get an adopted PowerBook to network with my PC's. I eventually broke down and went with DAVE. What was it, $150?

If all you want to do is share an internet connection that is attached to the Windows network, you can do that for free. File and printer sharing is a different story. Some would say that's what you get for having a Mac.

I've noticed that one of the included protocol options in Windows 2000 is AppleTalk. I dunno how far that will get you and I've never tried setting it up, but it's worth looking into.

I tried dave, and really liked it, but like you said, its 150 bucks, and I don't have that kind of cash after laying down the big bucks for the g4 itself. I saw that appletalk protocol in win2k, installed it, but it didn't seem to do anything. The g4 doesn't see the apple talk enabled boxes, and the win2k boxes don't see the g4. urgh /

Just a thought - if you have Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server you can install Macintosh services that will supposedly let you use the 2k box as a Mac server, too. Haven't tried it but I will be shortly. I'm in the process of setting up Win2k Adv. Server at home, but haven't tried the Mac stuff yet....

I'll let you know how it works out - I probably won't get to that until next weekend (2/17, 2/18).

microsoft services for macintosh provides file and print sharing for macintosh computers. It was also included with NT4.0 but extrememly buggy. The 2000 version is much better and won't have you screaming at the NT box for days on end.

I'm guessing you need a server version of 2000 for theses services? Don't know for sure.

Well, I got the Mac services up and running on my Windows 2000 Advanced Server machine. Took about 1 hour to read the help topics and learn a bare minimum about AppleTalk to get everything set.

Key points -

The folder(s) you share using AppleTalk MUST be on an NTFS volume.
You need to know about Appletalk network numbers and zones.
Everything you need to know is hidden in various places in the Win2k help system.

It was really pretty easy to set up and it doesn't appear that Mac files get mangled (i.e., data and resource forks are preserved) when you store them on the Win2k server.

Upgrade??? DAVE is $150. Advanced Server is like $3000 or something. My copy of Advanced Server is an evaluation copy I got for free from Microsoft, but they don't do that anymore, I don't think.
