Win2k & networking

I've seen this question asked before but none of the answers have worked for my situation.

I'm at school, and I'm trying to allow my roommate to access my computer over the network, using Win2k. I set up a user with the same name that he uses to log in to his computer as, set up the folder I want to share and gave that user read only access to it.

When he tries to access my computer through network neighborhood (before he can even see what folders I'm sharing), it gives him this prompt:

You must supply a password to make this connection.

Resource: \\SIRFREDRICK\IPC$

Password:

__________________

The password I assigned him is blank so I just have him leave the password field blank and hit enter, he gets:

___________________
The password is incorrect. Try again.
___________________

followed by the same prompt again.

Any suggestions?

Is the password you assigned him exactly the same as the one he uses to login to his computer? ie. Does he leaves his password blank when he logins to his computer also?

No, I don't know what his password is on his computer.

That is the problem there... the username and password on your win2k machine HAS to be identical to the password and username he uses to logon to his PC... Or else it does not work...

You must be logged in as an administrator then go to Control Panel and select "Users and Passwords" Select add...Put in your roomates computer name under User name and then click next....then put in a password....next...then select a group, Guest is always the safest bet, then click finish. Tell him the password and that should work...also make sure you share the files on your computer!

I now have two users set up, one with the user name he uses to log in, one with his computer name. Still having the same problem. Will try to find out his password later.

Just enable the guest account in User Manager

Guest was enabled.

I finally got it - apparently the password cannot be null. I assigned him a random password and now it works.

Password cannot be null?

If that's the case, then you're my savior. I have been trying to get it to work forever and I couldn't. What really made me mad is on my old w2k installation, it worked just fine and I couldn't recreate it this time around. Now that I think about it, I had a password before and now I don't.

I can force files from w2k onto my 98 box, but I'd rather be able to grab from 98. Damn, I want to leave work now to try it out Thanks a lot

Hey Shudder, no problem. I'm assuming it was the null password thing since it worked as soon as I changed that. Let me know if it works for you.

I was getting the same problem when trying to network two computers at work....The other computer was logged in as default which gave the same error (asking for password for SHARDED$....) once he logged in to the computer with his name, and setup a user profile, it let him in....I don't think It matters if there is a password or not...unless there is a password setup in the Win2k profile....
