Win2k/ntfs/no admin password

My oh-so-leet cousin decided to change my admin password in one of my win2k machines, he had the nerve to install a key logger.
Anyway i managed to download a ntfs dos boot disk and tried to delete the "sam" file in the system32/config directory but i can't un-hide it, says i dont have permission. Am i screwed here?

I have never tried it but some bootable linux cds have password cracking tools. link
I would try beating the password out of your cousin first.

there are some linux boot cds that can change the passwords out there, I have one, but alas i do not know where it can be downloaded. Search google and you will find

Regardless of whether or not it will yield results, I recommend beating your cousin as well.

there's also winternals ERD. that'll change any local password on the machine

So these linux bootdisks will work on a windows ntfs partition?
ERD isnt free, and im not paying for his stupidity.

I managed to change his hotmail password, i used a keylogger myself when he was using my main computer before just because i didnt trust him. Since i was in the room he didnt try anything funny but check some websites and his email. Muwahahahaha

yea you should just use knopix std and retrieve the sam file(WINNT\system32\config\SAM) then use a program to crack it like SamInside and/or LOphtCrack heh this works, I've used it to get the adminstrative pass at school doesnt work if they have a password in the bios and boot from cd is disabled....

I've used, I think, that disk before and it works wonders.

That tool is excellent; I use it at work all the time. One thing to note is that blank passwords (enter * for a blank password when prompted) work better than setting the password to a new one.

Have you considered brokering a "hostage exchange" of passwords, though some sort of neutral mutual 3rd-party?

(This assumes that you changed the password to his hotmail acct., thus resulting in a mutual-lockout situation.)

I managed to reset the password with the utlitity A.K.A. posted, couldnt be any happier.
Now as for his hotmail password, he can go and %#$% himself after the little stunt he tried on me.
