Win2k on AMD CPU

Will windows 2000 run well on a AMD CPU? Is it supported? I am thinking of buying a new PC but if possible I want to go in for an AMD CPU with win2k........

As long as the AMD cpu is an athlon or higher it should work fine with Win2k.

Win2k works well with just about any new cpu as long as the speed of the cpu and ram is sufficient (~500mhz cpu with 128megs ram minimum, but 256megs ram preferred).

hell, i have even run win2kpro on a pentium 133, although slow, it worked excellent.

Well, unfortunately Win2000 won't run perfectly on ANY system... However, I believe it will run as well on an AMD system as on an Intel system, so it's not an issue.

AMD CPU's will run Win2k fine... prior to the Athlon's - most, if not all, AMD CPU's had Microsoft Window's mark on the chip itself. Can't say that with the Intel line-up

I have an Athlon 500 o/c'd to 650, 256mb of ram and w2k is much more responsive than it was on my P3 600 laptop, 256 mb ram.

Windows 2000 will work fine with an AMD CPU. I've had it on all of my AMD rigs, as low as a Duron 600, but it was overclocked

I dont know where you got the 500mhz minimum from

Microsofts Minimum Requirements are a Pentium or compatible 133mhz with 64meg ram for Professional.

Ive had 2k Pro running on a P100 with 32meg of ram before. It was a surprisingly good install.

Ran better than my p3-500 (No comment...)

I have W2K Server running on a K6-II 450 with 384 megs of ram and W2K pro on a 166 laptop with 64 meg of ram and both run fine.

Hell yeah W2K will work with any AMD cpu! W2K has run on my AMD Duron 700MHz before and now Duron 1.3GHz with no problem. My friend run W2K on his AMD K6-500, too

I'm sure that it does work ok on a slower than 500mhz cpu but it is more resource demanding so if I had anything under that with less ram and it wasn't running as a server, I would not use Win2k, I would use Win98 SE probably, but that's just a personal preference. It will work best on a faster system with more ram.

I have an old K62 350mhz and I wouldn't put Win2k on it even with the amount of ram that I have cause I can do everything that I need with an OS more suited to the older cpu. The current cpus out at the time of Win2k's release weren't P100 or P166's, they were fast P2/P3s and Athlons and the K62's were starting to get pretty dated so that's why I said approx. a 500mhz cpu, although it will probably work on something with lower specs, but I wouldn't do it.

I'm running Win2K just fine on two of my AMD comps. 2 of the other 3 run Linux and 1 runs Win 98SE.

Thnx for the reply guys I appreciate that. A friend had told me that win2k will hv probs on an AMD CPU that's why I was a little in doubt.

However someone said that there is a AMD version of win2k......sounds a little shady.........can u give more details?

I've somehow jerryrigged my AMD system to work with Windows 2000 Pro for a few years now. =)

Works fine with AMD CPUs, however....

the hardware support for peripheral cards that came out before it is abysmal. It doesn't work properly with any ISA sound cards (even a Creative Labs branded SB AWE32 works like crap stopping all multitasking whenever a sound is played more than even generic PC speaker with the only existing drivers). Also there were never W2K drivers made for any Voodoo cards pre-Voodoo3 (classic Voodoo is seen as an unknown device and nothing can use it in 2K).
