Can anyone tell me how to go about setting this up after a reformat? I have one 40GB drive, and I can get Partition Magic if needed. How many partitions, and what sizes do I make them? What OS do I install first? That kind of stuff.

Also, can anyone tell me the best order to install all the drivers/set up the OSes for the following hardware:

AMD T-Bird 1.4GHz
Gigabyte GA-7DXR
IBM Desktar 60GXP 40GB (On IDE3, which uses the Promise controller on the motherboard.)
Gainward Cardex GeForce3
SoundBlaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1
3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI NIC
Pioneer DVD-106S

Thanks a lot in advance,
Tzen

Install 98 first, because Win2k will overwrite the MBR and also allow you to dual boot.
Then install 2k and let it do its dual boot thing.

The order I install stuff:
Mobo drivers on CD
VIA 4-in-1 latest
Latest Detonator drivers

Install other hardware 1-by-1, upgrading drivers for each before adding other hardware.

That usually works for me

Thanks, agnitrate. I have a few more questions, though.

Just boot from a bootdisk, format, and install 98SE? Will 2kPro partition the drive when I install it? I heard they should be on seperate partitions. Previously, when I've done a clean install of Win2kPro, it only lets me use NTFS. Is this going to cause a problem because 98SE uses FAT32? I also heard not to install the VIA 4-in-1 drivers with this motherboard.

Edit: How big should I make the partitions? I want to use 98SE for games and 2kPro for everything else. Also, NTFS or FAT32 for the 2kPro partition? (if it's an option)

Tzen, Use a windows 98 boot disk and use fdisk to partition the drive. after you partition the drive format each partition you want fat32. You will find both commands on the ram drive that the program makes. You can use fat32 on 2000 I am currently running on fat32. I found it very annoying when using 98 and couldn't get to certain files. You will less security features available though.

As for the number of partitions you need is up to you. You will need at least 2 one for each OS. The first one should be smaller than 8Gig because 2000 won't boot past 8Gig I think. Some people like to put a small partition first and use it for the swapfile. I like to keep my drive with the OS's on them under 10Gb simply for defrag time. I have 3 drives with a total of 6 partitions but the first cdrom drive is I. Mainly depends on how tweaked you want it.

Hope this helps.

Install win98se and then while in win98se install the win2k disc. Do a clean install of win2k and there you go you have a dual boot system.

Even if you decide to go with FAT 32 I would still do at least two partitions. This makes it easier if and when you realize that you aren't really using 98 that much anymore. Took me about a week. Just format the 98 partition and use it for storage. I would recommend a third partition in FAT 32 that you can keep things like drivers and MP3 files on so if you decide to format the whole thing you already have easy access to your important files.
