Win7 is a POS. When's SP1 going to be released?

I used Vista for 2.5+ years and had one BSoD and that was because of some PS3Server software I was trying to install.

Since clean installing Win7 x64 Pro less than 2 months ago, I've had three BSoD. No reason that I could find, just BSoD. And three system lockups while playing Steam based games. The last lockup, just a few minutes ago, required using a System Restore point.

Who would have guessed the Vista > Win7.

Alright, sorry for the rant, but does anyone know when SP1 will be released?

Not to make slight of your new found hatred of Windows 7, but have you investigated for hardware problems? Memtest, etc...

Yeah, RAM checks out. Right now I'm downloading new drivers for my Vid card & motherboard (MB drivers may or may not be new, need to compare version numbers).

In general there are millions of people using Win 7, and it works well for them.

You have a specific problem on your specific installation.

Option 1. Use Technological know how and solve the problem yourself.

Option 2. Seek professional help.

Option3. The common solution. Issue a triple string of wtf, pos, etc. Eliminate a six pack, watch a ball game (it always easier to get the glory through someone else's work), and complain about the world. D:

If you opt for Option1, maybe this can Help,

Can we have this thread bronzed?

I think it's the first worthy "Win7 is a POS" rant.

Get the newest memtest+ 4.0 ( do the install64.bat )
It found issues that my old memtest+ did not find.
Let it run for at least 5 passes. You want NO errors.

Then, get the new 64 bit version of Prime95 ( called P96 now )
Run the default 'mixed' test. Again, you want it to run till completion without stopping.

I been running prime95 for 2 days now, while encoding movies and watching DVDs, surfing etc, on my old AsRock in my sig.

Currently running 11 x 209fsb at CAS 2.0 2 2 6 T1 on 2gb DDR1.

Speedy OS.

I've installed Win7 on countless machines, with diverse hardware, and I haven't had a BSOD yet.

Same ,last time I had BSOD was in Win7 beta, retail version however has been solid with 0 BSOD,misle if you have had 3 or so BSOD then there is always a reason,it may take awhile to find and could be anything from hardware to a simple driver issue, normally its not the OS but something else.

Could be a Steam issue.

I remember seeing something about Steam automatically going into compatability and messing up games, but that was awhile ago. Worth a check though.

Thanks for the tips guys. It's appreciated.

The crashing during games may be a Steam issue. But I had my first BSoD the day I installed the OS. I'm not really sure what's going on with it yet. This same setup ran Vista without any hickups for a couple years.

In your case, make sure Windows 7 is installed while CPU or anything is NOT overclocked. If you have corrupt Windows installed due to overclocking issues, changing anything now will do nothing.

Windows 7 is how old now? And you want a SP already?

A BSOD will give you an indication of what is wrong.
Have you checked the error log to see what is causing you problems?
Bitching about BSOD and not posting specifically the error codes is just a squeaking wheel.
No matter what happens it is thye OS's fault and not my hardware....

on and on ...

Windows 7 has been running on several of my systems since early beta and I have never had a BSOD, I also had the same results with Vista and XP. I cannot remember a BSOD since Windows 98 on any of my systems.

Maybe I am just lucky?

My first response to "XXXXX sucks" posts is that you're an idiot. After reading this post, I'm not convinced that my first impression isn't true. Sorry bud, but you should try to get help without "blah blah sucks" posts.

Sounds like user error, to me.

Windows 7 has always worked fine for me. Been using it since the beta without a hitch. Much better than Vista and XP. Got it running flawlessly on two systems right now.

Most BSODs during games are usually related to coding issues with the game itself. Either that or it's PBKC issue

Had BSODs on Vista64 only related to gaming and video drivers. No problem since Win7 installed.

BSOD almost always is a driver issue.

True, some drivers have severe incompatibilities with certain titles. I've had games BSOD on me at random though. Namely Bioshock.

So what this means is we go through the usual process. Reinstall the game, get the latest drivers, download all the game's patches (I guess Steam does this automatically, I've never really used it), etc.

Is your processor or GPU overclocked? Maybe the system is unstable.

I'm running Win7 on 2 of my work machines, all my home machines and both of our laptops I've had no issues thus far aside of some minor software compatibility issues. Like the others have suggested, I would look at hardware failure and compatibility. Update all of your hardware drivers, motherboard, sound card, video card, nic all of it.

BSOD almost always is a driver issue.

Or a bad hard drive. Happened to me earlier this weekend (while working on a programming project due in three days). Had no clue, then started getting intermittent BSODs. After a while, I was getting them continuously, only to be followed by the drive dying.

I remember how we all thought WinXP was bloated and compared to Win2000 it was but when compared to Vista, WinXP has a halo above it.

I really liked Win2000 and since I waited for post SP2 I do like Win XP. Plus by SP2 I had hardware fast enough for WinXP.
