Yes, if it gets really bad, it won't even be able to process updates from the device drivers until it pulls them back into memory. Less likely to happen with PS/2 peripherals, since their drivers are smaller are more hard-wired into the OS.

An SSD is faster than an HDD by a large margin, but it's still many many times slower than memory. If you're running out of memory, you should get more memory rather than trying to do and end run around it by getting an SSD.

To followup, I ended up upgrading from 6 GB to 16 GB of RAM. It made a huge difference. No more lockups, so the guys who suggested pagefile thrashing were spot on. :thumbsup:
I would never run RAM from 2 different brands and differing sizes like that. Most likely they both have different latency values also. However, when computers slow down like this, it is often because too much junk ware has been downloaded. Often if you download programs on the Internet it has a tendency to slow down your computer.
