Win98 Lite?

For awhile there, people were stripping Win98 down for fastest gaming rigs. I've got some older P.O.S. systems (P233 w/64MB RAM and some small HD) running Win95. Would like to move them forward (Win2K would be nice, but not enough power, I think) Would Win98 Lite do for me or is there a Lite version of 2K or XP?

I would put Win98 Lite on there, Win98 normal would also work and be acceptable... If you can get another 128MB of RAM thoughm you could run Win2000 without any problems. Its not the CPU that limits the choice in this case, its the RAM and 64MB is just not enough.

Win98 Lite would be perfect for that system. However, the last time I checked the Win98 Lite site, they were working on a 2K/XP Lite version...

It looks like the original 98lite has been bought out. They used to have a free version that you could use that had limited features. I used to use it. It worked pretty well. I gave it up for a few reasons. One of the big reasons to use it was because you could get rid of IE. But you need it in this day and age of security patches and updates, because MS doesn't let you do internet updates without IE, and MS has made it very difficult to download just the patches. Another problem with no IE is that some programs use internet explorers help file interface and won't install without seeing a version of IE installed. Here is a link anyways.

Yep, unless you subscribe to the various places that will package all the patches on CD each month and mail them to you, MS update site is crucial.

At $39.00 a copy of XPlite/2000lite is much more competive than MS XP/Win2k, and better yet it come with out the bloat

Woops, you haven't read the details. You need to own a copy of windows and, at least with the old 98lite, have the install cab files in a folder on the hard drive.

Woops, I missed that....Then there isn't much of a different in optimization by turning off un needed Services.
