Granted i am sort of "speed reading" through these posts, not reading every word, but have you installed service pack 3 yet ??

When i put win2k on, i was disapointed in the gaming performance. Many benchmarks (especially the one built into UT2003) indicated lower performance (yet 3dmark scored higher), and i was not a happy camper.

I downloaded service pack three and the performance was back with a vengance. My UT2003 bench was up 7% higher than with win9x then.

- I turn my computer off when i am not using it, because i see no reason to have fans pulling dust into my case 24 hrs a day when i'm not using it.

With 256 or even 512 megs of ram you won't notice much difference in memory management performance. My last machine had 1536 megs of pc133 and this one has 1024 of pc2700, and the management is MUCH better in win2K when doing video editing or having several things open at once or editing very large pictures in photoshop.
The way you use your machine, you prolly wouldn't ever use more than 512 megs of ram. (i would still realllly recomend 512 over 256 megs for modern gaming, though 256 is sufficient).

You know how to get a VIA and sb16 (isa card) to work in WinXP?

OK, you guys are making progress in your arguments.

I finally found a driver for my scanner, and I did a few tweaks and got things speeded up to my Win98 speeds. Part of this might have been a lan issue. I finally got ICS to work and all computers now show up in the work group. I think I'm starting to like it. For me, it just has to do everything the same as Win98, it doesn't have to be alot better. Another observation is my average framerates went from 75 to 80 in UT at 1280 x 960 x 32 at 2X FSAA. My 3DMark 2001SE score is still the same.

Soon I'm gonna jam another stick of Samsung Original PC2700 DDR in there and I will have to abandon Win98 forever, I think 512MB of ram will make it screwy. Is there a way to use my Win2000 CD to just format and partition the FAT32 partition to straight NTFS? I have a dual boot with 40GB on C: for Win98, and 20GB on D: for Win2000, and I really don't want to wipe D: clean and start all over. Don't assume I know anything, I'm pretty new to Win2000 stuff.

If you have a full version or OEM CD, you can boot from it to start the installation. During the installation, you will be asked to choose a partition to install on. To make an NTFS partition (to get the security features of Windows 2000), just delete the FAT32 partition that has Windows 2000 on it currently (if that's what you want to do), and create a new one in its place. When you select the option to install Windows 2000 onto that partition, the installer will ask you how you want it to be formatted. Remember, although NTFS gives you better security, in a home environment you probably don't need it (unless you have a snoopy sister or mom ), and Windows 98 can not read NTFS (if you're going to dual boot this is something to take into consideration).

If you have more questions, or if I did not explain the process clearly enough, feel free to ask more questions. It's better to be safe than sorry, especially when it concerns a data-destructive action like repartitioning your hard disk and / or reformatting partitions.

Unless he does some additional work, he will still have a boot prompt for the nonexistent win98 OS at startup. Not a big deal really, it will default to the win2k partition after 25 seconds. All you have to do is press enter when you get to the prompt.

If he does decide to wipe his hard drive and make it Windows 2000-only, and gets annoyed with the unnecessary boot prompt, I'd be glad to help him fix the problem. It's very simple, actually, and takes only a minute or two to do.

Well, yes if there is an isa slot on the board
tried that with KT133 (Jetway 663AS), just plug and detect the new hardware manually ;P
