Granted i am sort of "speed reading" through these posts, not reading every word, but have you installed service pack 3 yet ??
When i put win2k on, i was disapointed in the gaming performance. Many benchmarks (especially the one built into UT2003) indicated lower performance (yet 3dmark scored higher), and i was not a happy camper.
I downloaded service pack three and the performance was back with a vengance. My UT2003 bench was up 7% higher than with win9x then.
- I turn my computer off when i am not using it, because i see no reason to have fans pulling dust into my case 24 hrs a day when i'm not using it.
With 256 or even 512 megs of ram you won't notice much difference in memory management performance. My last machine had 1536 megs of pc133 and this one has 1024 of pc2700, and the management is MUCH better in win2K when doing video editing or having several things open at once or editing very large pictures in photoshop.
The way you use your machine, you prolly wouldn't ever use more than 512 megs of ram. (i would still realllly recomend 512 over 256 megs for modern gaming, though 256 is sufficient).
