Win98se - Desktop Problem

I recently installed Win98se on my machine and after installing all the software I wanted/needed, I've run into a small, annoying problem with one particular folder.

Everytime I shutdown and restart my machine this particular folder opens on the desktop. I close, restart and it reopens itself on the desktop. It's not a major problem, but it sure is annoying and I'd like to prevent it from happening.

Anyone out there ever had this problem? You help would be appreciated.

I've never had that happen. Try doing this:

Go to Start, Run, type MSCONFIG. See if anything unusual or a folder is there that will be created or opened up everytime you restart. Also check your autoexec.bat. That or the only other thing I can think of is possibly a virus.

This folder isn't kak.hta is it????????? If it is, do as RagingBITCH suggests and run msconfig, go to the autoexec.bat dialog box, there are two lines in the dialog box:

@echo off>C:\windows\startm~1\programs\startup\kak.hta
del C:\windows\startm~1\progms\startup\kak.hta

If these two lines are not checked then you will get a folder that opens every time windows re-boots, like you say, this is not a big problem, but it is annoying. I think these files are related to the Karaoke software that comes with the SB Live, I have un-installed this program but it failed to remove these entries from the autoexec.bat, BTW if you manually remove these entries, the folder will still open, the only way that I have found to keep it from opening, is to leave the lines in tact. If anyone has had this problem please post!!! I hope this helps.

I tried doing what RagingB said, but there is nothing that looks outta place or even remotely resembles the folder that is opening. I installed PowerQuest's DriveCopy - the program installed just fine and appears to work.

It's just that the folder PowerQuest opens up EVERY frigging time my machine boots up. ANNOYING at best. My best guess is it's something in the registry - anyone have any other suggestions??

What is the folders name? Is it close to any program that is on your computer? It may be a program saving information on the desktop!

Actually those lines in autoexec.bat that have kak are part of the cagou kak worm virus. It strikes the first of every month after 5p or so.

Open the system configuration utility, and under startup, deselect powerquest and anything else you dont want to start up at boot...this will free up system resources as well.
