winamp 5 and ppl with good headphones & sound cards!

i just dnlded Winamp 5, awesome interface and features... but the sound SUCKS, when compared to WMP9!
i'm using audigy 2 and sennheiser HD497, basically ur top of the line sound card and better than avg cans.
...played the same mp3 song back to back and theres noticeable sound difference.

winamp has this static, or fuzz, in the background, kind of like if you put your ear really close to a crappy speaker setup with the volume turned way up with no music playing. just that hiss noise.
it's more pronounced during silent parts of songs, and i noticed the same hissing with winamp 2.xx and 3.

i love the interface of WA5 but the sound of WMP9 is so much cleaner!

is it just me? can someone confirm this?

Well, if you really care about your sound quality that much, try using foobar2000 + Kernel Streaming...

I've always preferred WMP to WinAmp. I think WinAmp has the built in pre-amp, where you can adjust the gain, and it ruins the sound. Don't fear Microsoft. If it works well, use it.

M-Audio, TB, and Phillips are all pretty pimptastic for music (and ONLY music--us gamers are still stuck w/ SB, maybe TB excepted).

thank u... i didn't want to boost the figures that high because i know there's much better stuff out there, but uncle wai over there seems to think otherwise

the next step up from 497s are 150-200 dollar headphones, and not very many people use that expensive headphones at all

you'll need to run a double blind test .. head over to hydrogenaudio for more info.

prolly some sort of placebo. but if *you* can hear it, i can't argue .. i don't have your ears. the double blind tests will help guide you.

I have an OK setup (HD280 Pros/Audiophile 2496) but I don't hear a difference between Winamp/WMP

Someone else posted about the same problem last week so maybe I'm missing something

yup there are.. for the niche market...
but I doubt there are many people that buy them.
Most people are satisfied with some $20 sony/koss headphones or $10 portable bud/behind ear headphones @ local b&m electronics store

yeah, most common folk scoff at the idea of paying $50+ for headphones. they're perfectly happy with their crappotastic 10 dollar stuff from bestbuy.

but I doubt there are many people that buy them.

yeah I have the HD497... my sis thought I was crazy for spending $60 on a set of headphones.
Most people think $60 are the most expensive headphones money can buy... and the better ones are the wireless ones.
When I tell people I got a nice set of headphones.. the first thing they ask me is if they are wireless.

Audigy sure is nice, but for pure music it is definitely not the best or anywhere close to it. TB or any card based on the new Via Envy24HT is considerably better in term of music.

Looks like I'm gonna have to upgrade my Fortissimo 3, can only output 16bit.

VRB + Mad + Koss Pro 4AA = beautiful
