so for some reason winamp is crashing all the time on my vista machine. are there any alternatives to winamp, besides WMP, itunes, or the zune software?

there's plenty, like Media Monkey, Media Portal, or Foobar. Or for low footprint try 1by1. Winamp 5.x works fine on my Vista machine, newest is 5.52 I think. You can always try an older version like 2.9x, or you can try Winamp Lite

+1 for foobar.

iTunes is actually pretty good if you have your music organized like a freak. If it's not organized though... yeah iTunes is garbage.

Can Media Jukebox play .spc (super nintendo sound) files like foobar can? If not that rules it out for me right off the bat.

That aside though, what advantages does Media Jukebox have? It's sound quality is better in what ways? Most sound quality differences are all in people's heads. Now if the equalizer is better, that's one thing. But I always use a flat EQ anyway, so that's a moot point for me.

There are a few features I don't like about foobar that Wincamp has, but sadly I use foobar now. For example, I don't believe foobar has the ability to stop after current song. ???

What? Are you a communist or something? Stop the music?!?! :^P Seriously the newest version will do this, I'm not sure about older ones because I never needed that feature. Click menu button Playback, and select checkbox Stop After Current

I guess I'll have to try it. My one gotcha is that I've been using Winamp mostly to play BIG MP3 recordings (1 - 3 hours) and I use a freeware called trackmaker 1.2 to split the files. I get my bookmarks by pressing a button in trackmaker while the MP3 is playing in Winamp (2.91). I just don't know what other programs trackmaker will work with. If there's another MP3 file splitting utility, please advise.

haha, guys im not kidding about mediajukebox. this isnt just a player... its a media manager. it handles ipods better then itunes does. it handles tags as good as mp3tag does. it burns cd's excellently. it can make ANY folder on your network a portable player (easy auto backups!), the equalizer has EXCELLENT dsp settings and the EQ has full over-clipping control, it a full featured program with a light footprint.

and if you want more, www.jrmediacenter.com is the same thing but it adds video and picture support.

i had the same arguments before i tried this program years ago. "why is it better then winamp?" is what i would ask. i got laughed at. NOW im laughing at you guys for not knowing haha...

just trust me, mediajukebox is the best. no question hands down. just try it for a month and come back and say otherwise, i dare you.

It looks like a decent player, but I won't try it :^P I'm used to where everything is in Foobar, and I like the utilitarian setup. One thing I noticed missing in mediajukebox is ripping to mp3. Is that available with a LAME plugin or something?

The thing with foobar is it is fairly lackluster straight outta the box. Once you've customized it and tweaked the settings and all that jazz, it really is tough to beat.

And since my music is already organized, I don't need a media manager. I just need a player, and foobar has that down pretty well.

I'll take your word for it though. Media Jukebox looks nice, it just has a lot of things I don't need.

on your advice I tried mediajukebox. One great thing is that it allows you (if you set it up right) to have a hybrid folder view ~ media library layout (I achieve almost the same thing in Winamp using the dynamic library plugin). The down sides are that mediajukebox doesn't seem to support asian characters (that rules it out for me), and importing the library was very slow in my case (almost 2 hours before it finished).

i just installed foobar. i really like it. my only qualm is that the file info and album art doesnt update to the currently playing song, only the one selected in the playlist. it loads SUPER fast though, compared to winamp. almost instantaneous.

How do you mean? It has huge customization potential, but I actually like the stock setup. Even the newer version's "default" is a little fancier than I generally like, but I've gotten used to it :^D

:\ I use ALSong. I want a media player, not a media manager + other bullshit. Besides that I can minimize it to tray which foobar can't (at least not what I tried it)

Shens. j/k

Just to make sure; we are talking about minimize to tray right and not minimize to start bar?

It can be tough finding the option to make it do exactly what you want(not the most user friendly), but Foobar options seem to be limitless if you put the work in. I've seen some people's setups that I wouldn't have known it was Foobar if it weren't for the icons.

iTunes, WMP and Zune are perfect for people who don't have their music organized. Set them to monitor various folders and don't even bother with organization; let the programs do it for you.

Now if by "organized like a freak" you mean "have all the tags filled in", then yeah. Without proper and full tagging, those programs can be fustrating to use. But honestly, the library feature of any player would be fustrating to use without your files being tagged properly.

Anyway, yeah several programs have already been mentioned. I didn't see Songbird though, so I'm throwing that one out.

...not that I've used it in a long while, I'm a fan of the Zune software.
