"Wind and solar generated more power than coal through the first seven months of the year, federal data shows, in a first for renewable resources."

Here's a bit of positive news in these crazy times.

The milestone had been long expected due to a steady stream of coal plant retirements and the rapid growth of wind and solar. Last year, wind and solar outpaced coal through May before the fossil fuel eventually overtook the pair when power demand surged in the summer.

But the most recent statistics showed why wind and solar are on track in 2024 to exceed coal generation for an entire calendar year — with the renewable resources maintaining their lead through the heat of July. Coal generation usually declines in the spring months, due to falling power demand and seasonal plant maintenance, and picks up when electricity demand rises in the summer.

I had no idea wind and solar were producing close to the same amount of electricity as coal. I guess the sky isn't falling like they said it would.

That is more of a sad news that US is still using so much coal. But then there is PRC... They account for 50% of world coal consumption. India at 11.3% and USA at 8.5%

Too much damage to stop the sky from falling. But our species could still, in theory, figure out how to survive on an increasingly hostile planet.

Wonder when wind and solar production in the US will surpass production using hydrocarbons (coal, oil, and natural gas).

This can’t be right. Based on the gop’s talking points this is impossible and there would have been massive blackouts.

I was hoping those folks would stop by this topic.

From the link:

“Renewables will continue to be a huge part of the industry, but I think there will be an inflection point where the incremental value of an additional megawatt-hour from renewables will be less than some other alternatives,” he said.

Others were less sure. The rapid growth of wind, solar and batteries in Texas shows that renewables can be built quickly and stabilize the electric grid, said O’Connell. The state is “sailing through a crazy summer” thanks to record wind, solar and battery output, he said.

This must drive some folks crazy. They are taught to hate renewable clean electric but they never consider the motivation of the people feeding them misinformation. I don't know about the rest of you but I don't like being lied to but 50% of the US is perfectly fine with being misinformed.

"The War on Coal is over!"

Said the former head of the Environmental fucking Protection Agency.

Hiring a lump of crap like Scott Pruitt to head the EPA alone would be enough cause for me to not vote Trump again, were I at all inclined to vote Trump.

Start investing in birds cemeteries (according to Trump).
Seriously, need massive energy storage infrastructure. Modern liquid battery storage solutions need some investment.
