The climate minister will begin an investigation into two separate cases of Vestas wind turbines collapsing within the past week

The climate minister, Connie Hedegaard, is calling for an investigation to determine the cause of two violent wind turbine collapses in Denmark in the past week.

Both of the windmills were produced by Vestas, and Hedegaard's request to the Energy Board comes after other breakdowns both here and abroad have been reported in the past two months.

'The problems with the turbines abroad have had to do with poor maintenance, and if that's the case here, then I expect a clear report on how we can ensure this problem is rectified,' Hedegaard told Berlingske Tidende newspaper.

Her comments come on the heels of the government's new energy agreement ratified by parliament last week, which calls for the country to have 20 percent of its energy produced by sustainable sources by 2011.

In first of the two collapses, near the city of Århus, a 10-year-old windmill began spinning out of control during high winds. A recording of the explosion-like collapse shows one of the wing blades breaking off, casting debris into the three other wings and shearing the 60- metre tower nearly in half.

Vestas itself will also now conduct an internal investigation to determine why the wind turbines have been breaking down.

'We've still got about 35,000 wind turbines across the globe that are operating fine,' said Peter Wenzel Kruse, Vestas's spokesperson. 'But they're not infallible. We're doing what we can and learning from our mistakes.'

Farmer Keld Boye, who lives in Vig where the latest incident occurred on Sunday, was clearly shaken by the wind turbine's implosion.

'I drive my tractor and my wife rides horses out there,' he said. 'Just think if we'd been out there when it happened.'

EDIT: and the explosion is cool too , looks like fiberglass, you see the same thing when someone wrecks their expensive ass car .

Nice video...it's odd though...most of them are designed to feather themeslves during periods of high wind to avoid such self-destruction. I wonder if the safeties failed?
Not far from me is the Altamont Wind Farm. There is quite a variety of windmill types, sizes and styles up there, all designed to catch winds of different speeds and directions.

Article says the braking system failed. It was probably still trying to get some power from the wind, but designed with a brake to keep the speeds under control.

Even fully feathered, modern wind turbine blades will create lift in such a way to spin the turbine. Without a brake there was probably nothing they could do.

Good thing the techs got out of the turret before the thing went to hell.

Oh really? Then is Mawson Station pulling 243kW out of your ass?

Live power generation reports

If you want to talk about fact v. fiction in movies/television, it's fine by me. But if you want to see political bullshit where there is nothing to talk about, please take your narrow minded self and move to P&N. Even pcslookout, our resident village idiot, is better than you.

eh well 2 120kW wind turbines aren't an array of 1.5MW turbines like showed on House but w/e I guess I lose since I said there were none and apparently there are some, they just made it look a little more sexy for TV not completely made up.

What was that, 40+ mph ? What in the hell would you be doing on your tractor or your horse in that kind of weather.

Sounds like some sort of redundancy might be needed. Wind turbines that can't handle repeated high winds in some fashion just don't sound like a very good idea. I wonder what the failure rate is like for such things.

I love it when organizations try to cut back on maintenance to save money, only to watch the bills for outright replacement start to roll in. "Duh.....well gee, we never saw this coming." Then upper management resigns, complete with hefty "severance" packages. Take the money and run.

Or they start firing lower level "peons" for failing to do their jobs right, even though they were doing the job they were assigned to do. After all, peons aren't real people...and management's gotta save face somehow.

I think that these things are fluid/oil dampened. After a while, the fluid loses its viscosity, or ability to withstand shear stresses, and can no longer dampen the turbine!

Time to roll out a massively expensive maintenance/equipment audit.

I commute past them every day ( Patterson Pass rd). I notice they lock down completely during really high winds. They had them all shut down during that wicked storm we had blow through between xmas-new years..

That's the only part of the trickle-down economy that reliably works, every single time.
