Passover Is Coming, And It's Your Chance To Buy Real Sugar Products

Passover is a holiday that has special meaning to everyone, regardless of faith, because it’s the time of year when some food and drink companies release products sweetened with real sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). If you want to stock up on real sugar Coca-cola or u-bet chocolate syrup (which I’ve never heard of, but John Hodgman seems to like), or if you just want to see whether you can really taste a difference between HFCS and cane or beet sugar, now’s your chance.


This year Passover starts on March 25th so Kosher for Passover products should be available a few weeks before that date.

The "non Kosher" aspect of HFCS is due to the industrial use of crushed animal bones inside of the production filters (in case you were wondering).

Er... no. HFCS is not kosher for passover for Jews of Ashkenazi descent out of a tradition that prohibits consumption of grains like corn and rice on the holiday. Sephardi Jews eat corn products and others banned items like beans.

Never heard of the bones issue, so I looked into it. From what I saw, it's actually cane sugar where this is a concern, though most people don't seem to care about it.

From what I remember it has something do with the fact that grain can ferment slightly which is considered "leavening" which is why kosher for Passover foods have to be harvested and processed in a different way. Since its easier to just change to sugar than change the harvesting and storing of grains for HFCS for Passover they just substitute sugar.

I could be wrong since I learned about this many years ago.

If any of you are interested in the health effects of HFCS just do a search for "high fructose corn syrup insulin metabolism"

From an endocrinology stand point its pretty bad.

I for one have switched over to the old school Mtn Dew and just add lime to make up for the crap taste.

And if you are wondering, anything that tastes good and makes you hungry for more probably contains HFCS.
