Latest Windows fix can cause slowdown
Posted by etplanet on Friday, April 18 2003 at 6:53 PM EDT

WINDOWS UPDATE USERS and prudent sys admins might have installed the latest Windows patch without a thought. That might not have been such a good idea. The patch is meant to fix a hole in Windows Messaging but can end up causing a severe performance degradation.

The patch, which we wrote about here, has been causing grief for many users. If you have Windows Update running on automatic and you're experiencing a nasty slowdown on your system, you might want to try removing patch 811493. Users with the performance problems report that removing the patch fixes things.

I haven't noticed any more than the usual problems.

EDIT: Actually, I don't know if I have applied that one yet. I'll have to do it tomorrow. I'm about due for a reboot anyhow.

Aw man. This is rediculous. I've just installed 256 ram more (total of 512) on my laptop and updated to that patch (was one of the critical updates right?) and I was wondering for the whole damn day why it was choking. I've had many problems today (headache++) and this could be just it. I was worried that my stick of ram was defective or some bogus reason I was creating. I'll have to check on this later...

EDIT: Btw, thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for the post. Windows XP has been pissing me off these past few days because of slow downs. I was wondering if it was a Windows Update or Norton AntiVirus Update that caused it.

It has been as fast as usual for me after applying the patch. Some lag, generally annoying, but less so than security holes.

Jeesh, they are really F'ning with XP more and more. First they change the memory handling in XP with SP1 that basically brings the machine to its knees if you are using programs that swap large chunks of memory, and now this.

Unfortunately I had not patched XP with that patch, so my slowdowns are just general Microsoft lovelyness.

Yes it is a problem with that Windows Update patch and some Antivirus Programs (I have norton) if you disable your antivirus you can test it out, I just uninstalled the patch and all is well again, supposedly Microshaft is working on the problem.

That problem was overblown, it affected some very specific applications that where developed inhouse at a company and not publically available.

This was on NTbugtraq this morining.
The patches in question are Q817287 and Q811493.

People are having mixed results, (slow down or not). Best thing would be not to apply them.

thanks for the update saltin. I unistalled the patch yesterday - Q811493 - and the system is behaving itself now. I'm not sure if I'm going to remove Q817287 from my system since its not causing me any conflicts/slowness.

I can confirm, the same thing happened. Uninstalled the above patch (811493) and everything is back to normal.

That patch did drastically slow program load times on my system. Once I removed it everything went back to normal.

Last I heard was that Microsoft is currently working on another "critical" update to correct this problem, we shall see.

From what I have read if you are using auto protection type antivirus software, this is what causes the slow downs. I'd rather use autoprotect than install this patch personally, or wait until MS comes out with a 'fix for a fix'.

I havent had this problem on any of my boxes, I use Sophos at work and Norton at home.

One of my coworkers is complaining about it happening to him on his box at home (which is why I asked), he is running the same version of Sophos (with the exact same settings) as we are in the office so I was hoping it was something else in conjunction with a virus scanner running in the background.
