This problem is only apparent on my WinXP box, and not my Win2k. Both use Mcafee.

I just uninstalled the patch, because I was also wondering why the programs of a sudden started so much slower. Especially starting f.i. Adobe InDesign or WP 10 ...

I wasn't aware of that patch causing problems. I am aware of the patch associated with Knowledgebase article Q329170 causing Windows 2000 systems to take longer to shut down. With Q329170 installed it took two to three minutes to shut down two of my Windows 2000 systems. After I removed that patch, it now takes 5-10 seconds.

I am using two XP Pro rigs, a desktop and a notebook. Firstly I only removed it on the notebook. Then I removed it on the desktop. But strangely the scanner stopped working, or better the Twaindriver. So I had to restore XP to a point before installing the 811493 patch. Now everything is fine again.

But I got some bad feelings towards M$ because of this ... :|

I generally install all the new patches from Windows Update site.I recently installed the 811493 security vulnerbility patch on Win XP SP1 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];811493). The installation of the patch went smoothly. But after rebooting I noticed that my system had slowed down. Even Winamp started to skip when playing MP3's and other applications started taking almost double the time to load.Later on some of the forums and in the updated bulletin I read that the patch has been causing slowdowns in some computers running Win XP SP1 and Microsoft is working quickly to resolve the issue ( yeah right, the quickest they can come out is by the year 2020). So i decided to uninstall the patch. That also proceeded smoothly and upon rebooting, Windows BSODed. I reinstalled the patch in Safe mode and rebooted, and Windows worked perfect. After that I removed it again, and again during the next boot, Windows BSOD'ed. Now after installing the patch for the 3rd time and rebooting, Windows is working. But now the slowdowns are much more pronounced. Winamp 2 takes almost 8 secs to load, while it used load within 2 secs previously. Can anybody tell me on how to remove the patch safetly short of a reinstall ?

Thanks

Harsha

I had to update a few XP boxes yesterday and noticed that this patch is gone. Anyone else notice this too?

harsac: why don't you do it like I did, just restore your system to a restorepoint before you installed the patch? Then it will be as if you never installed it.

The patch still shows up in Windows update , but has been moved to "Recommended updates".
I was uninstalling crap, defragging and blaming my kid for a week trying to fiqure out what was slowing things down. Was running about the speed of my friend`s P233. Thought I was showing signs that my 1.6a was dying (due to 14 months of overclocking).

Ok guys I have this new system that I built and just recently it has been chopping and lagging real bad when I try to run a program (something basic like winamp) and then it will just lag out real bad when I try to open more than two files/folders. I am thinking that it could be Windows XP. I have the service pack??? Or is it possible that it could be my hard drives. I have defragged them! Specs of the system: Antec True Blu 430 Watt PSU, Gigabyte GA-SINXP1394 MOBO, 2X512MB Corsair XMS PC2700 DDR RAM, 2XWestern Digital 120Gb 8mb cache 7200 rpm hard drives, Radeon 9700 Pro All in Wonder, Pentium 4 2.8GHz (3.08GHz at 146FSB; Scored a 15741 in 3DMark2001SE before problems going to bench again and then post result). I have a CDRW and a DVD Drive, using on board realTek sound. Well I am sureI have all the latest drivers too! Any ideas ???? Thanks ElpiercoOh current CPU Temp 40degrees Celsius(?)

Guys I forgot to mention that I am runniong those two WD HD in RAID 0. Also I ran 3D Mark 2001SE and scored a 15664 still entire system seems lagged down I am going to go read the threads about the XP Patch...Thanks guys

I uninstalled that patch and my system is now running without the parachute attached. You guys know your shiat! I have another general question about the overclocking...In my bios there is now setting for the timing of my RAM you think it is running at default of 2s CAS? Is my system running hot? I am using the MCX4000 chunk of copper with a thermal take 80mm fan spinning at 4000rpm...Thanks again guys...Elpierco

THANK YOU!

For the last couple of days I've been contemplating fresh install of XP because of this bad lag that popped up after doing Windows Update.

You have saved the day, McGamer. Uninstalling that patch has cleared things up.

I must say, this is not par for Microsoft. It's very rare that a patch they send out makes things worse, or has a performance hit this bad. I hope they clear it up soon.

Thanks. I've been wondering what was going on in my system. Removing the patch changed things a lot!

If you are running pre-sp1, then it still shows up in the critical updates area. If you are running sp1 allready, then it shows up in the recommended area. Weird.

Thank you, Thank you...was driving me nuts. Slowed my laptop considerably, but couldn't pinpoint the start of it. Removed patch and all is well.
Again, thanks.

My updates seemed to have missed the 811* patch before it was moved to the recommended updates...

What about the 817287... I have that one installed and umm i havent noticed any performance lag at all (winxp pro) it says once its installed it cannot be removed.

this doesnt effect everyone, just a portion of installs.
