Correct! I have three systems - two regulars and one laptop. The regular P4 systems were not affected by 811, but my laptop was severely hobbled. After reading what the patch was about, I removed it on ALL systems - especially after M$ removed it from the critical list.

Spy is correct. I have three systems. Two were unaffected but one was severly crippled. I removed 811 from all, and they are all happy. It didn't pertain to normal home use anyway. M$ quicklyremoved it from the crit list.

Sorry about the redundant posts - did a Ctrl End and it did not flip the page so I kept repeating it.

The patches in question are Q817287 and Q811493.
People are having mixed results, (slow down or not). Best thing would be not to apply them.

Yeah, I'm one of those mixed-results people. I recently reinstalled XPpro on a new hard drive. I first tested it with a small partition and a basic & default XPpro install. Seemed quite fast and I was happy. I then nuked & paved with a real partition and installed XPpro, SP1, and all the Critical Updates except those glaring obvious for MSN, Microsoft IM, and .net framework. I do have Q817287 installed, but not Q811493 (inspection done through the View Installation History section of the Windows Update page.

I noticed a substantial slow-down (thought I went back to a 5400 RPM drive). I cannot find Q811493 even listed as an option, unless its been repackaged into another Critical Update & Service Pack. Q817287 is for: Critical Update (Catalog Database Corruption in Microsoft Windows). Since I cannot find Q811493 listed anywhere (none are being shown on the Add/Remove tool either), I have to assume its been removed from public distro or repackaged with something else.

Good thread, now I now where all that performance went. Reinstalled an older image and boom, back to normal.

The Creative SB Live! update also hosed things up in that I could no longer access Creative's Mixer (nice DLL error). Never touching a sound driver update on the MS site again.

Thank you MrGamer7934.

I've been troubled because of my comp has been on it's ass for some time now. IE and OE etc. took forever to load up.
I really thougt it was I who was doing something wrong. How stupid of me, I forgot I'm dealing with a M$ product. Hehheh. A fix on a fix on a fix. COOL.

I uninstalled patch 811493 and now my system is nearly normal again.

Thank You.

I've been using Win2k with this patch and haven't noticed any lag or slowdowns... Is it possible that is only affecting XP?

I went to add\remove programs but when I click on the patch, it gives me no option to remove. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA

You could restore Windows to a date or a time before installing the patch. In my restoreagenda it was marked as an own restorepoint, so it was easy to find a point before it ...

its been good to hear that removing this patch has helped many with their systems... I still dont understand why the patch is still available for download or even when they plan on releasing a fix.

What I discovered was that the loading of the programs took much longer time than usual, f.i. the Operabrowser or Adobe InDesign ...

I figured this slowdown problem out after recently performing a clean WinXP Pro install. With the patch installed, there was this weird latency or lag everytime I attempted to start an application. (For example I'd start Eudora, and then suddenly have like 3-5 seconds where the computer just seemed to freeze up). Upon removing the update from my system though, all is back to normal. Don't know if it's just an oddity of my system configuration or a more generalized problem with the patch, but I think I'll pass on it for now and keep my system humming along at it's happy pace.

They released the updated patch today, here is a blurb from microsoft:

"Microsoft re-issued this bulletin on May 28, 2003 to advise on the availability of an updated Windows XP Service Pack 1 patch. This revised patch corrects the performance issues that some customers experienced with the original Windows XP Service Pack 1 patch.

Microsoft originally issued this bulletin on April 16, 2003. Subsequent to that date, Microsoft has received reports of performance problems with the patch from some Windows XP customers. Microsoft has investigated this issue and confirmed that there can be performance problems when the patch is applied to Windows XP Service Pack 1 systems. Microsoft is actively working on a revised patch for Windows XP Service Pack 1 and will re-issue that patch when it has been completed and fully tested. The existing Windows XP SP1 patch does address the security vulnerability discussed in this security bulletin. "

So I think it should be safe to install now, anyone wanna try it out?

What do I do if there is no patch that is dragging my system down? i'm running xp pro and after a poweroutage, my videos and IE6 got choppy and no longer moves fast or smooth or normal for that matter. I have replaced my HD to 80gbWD, mobo to asus a7v8x-x, PS to new 400watts, cpu to 1700+amd, video card to msi ti4200 8x 128ddr....so i basically built a new computer. What do I do now? please assist if you can.
