I've read somewhere that it will be trial only a 1 year?

Yeah, I read somewhere on the absolutely ""truthful and honorable"" Internet that after a year a Yetty would come and take it. - - .

AFAIK, the upgrade is Free as long as you use the OS. If after few years New OS would come and you want to upgrade again, then You will have to pay for the New OS.

I.e., No Free for the Free.

I also hope Microsoft do some good Win10 upgrade offers for Vista users, something like they did with Win8 on its initial release would be great for Vista users, lucky for me all my PCs are Win8.1 so I don't have to worry about that, however I do know a few people still using Vista.

Though I think were are BEYOND lucky that Win10 is even being offered for free, I also wondered why not Vista. Until I remembered that Win8 will not even install on some Pentium 4 machines released with Vista becuase it's missing some CPU instruction support.

So I'm pretty sure to avoid disappointment to some Vista machine owners they just skipped them. Though I have not tried to install Win10 on those P4 machines yet. I'll have to try it this weekend.

My Hp DV-5 Was running Vista with product key, i upgraded to Win 7 with an Win 7 ISO and from there i upgraded to Win 10 preview,i don't know if MS will let me keep Win 10 after it becomes RTM, is yet to be seen,i mean free?

Who ever has Win vista check the link; try this Win7 ISO and from there try to upgrade to win 10 Preview. That's the way i did it.
I have nothing to loose if MS do not let me keep win 10 RTM for free,i'll
re-install Win Vista, and all be fine, till there i will take advantage of Win 10 which in my opinion may not be perfect at the moment but for my Video streaming is very good.

Haven't we covered this already?

If you own Win7, 8 or 8.1, you get Win10 for free.

Why offer a free upgrade to everybody on the planet?

It is not in Microsoft`s best interest to give things away for free to those who have no intention if it were not for the freebee of even upgrading from windows 98...to present...

about windows systems...not alternative systems! So all that was added was a smart remark.......
Nobody was talking about Linux systems.....
Well, the takeaway from my post was that even if something becomes "free", that doesn't automatically mean it's worth using, let alone if it costs money, because there's alternatives out there that have always been free, and maybe MS is already too late for this for some customers. I wouldn't want to be in Microsoft's position in this era, but I do think Satya and his team is doing a better job overall than MS has been in the past with some of their decisions.

Technically it's not a free offer to everybody,ie Enterprise users are exempt from the free offer deal and even Win7/8/8.1 users only get it free for life if they upgrade within the first year of Win10 initial release,if you double check my post I did say upgrade offer like they did with Win8, so I did not say free for Vista users but something low to encourage them to upgrade.

My point being Vista is coming towards its EOL ie April 2017, and just like Win7(EOL Jan 2020) is now on extended support,I would of thought Microsoft would encourage Vista users to move towards Win10 as well.

Personally if Microsoft are going to offer it free to Win7 users, they might as well do the same for Vista users as well, obviously you or I could also argue only Win8/8.1 users should get it free, so it works both ways depending on which side of the fence you are on.

End of the day it's in Microsoft's best interest to get consumers/people to upgrade even if they have to entice them with a good offer, old redundant operating systems frees up Microsoft's resources, improves security for all etc...

I forgot to mention piracy,I know a few people that actually paid for Win8 upgrade( the cheap offer from Microsoft on Win8 debut)just to get away from their pirated Win7 copy, moving people away from pirated copies is also another plus point even if they have to offer them a low cost of the OS,obviously piracy will always be around but anything that helps people move away from that is not a bad thing.

If MS is trying to now sell the Windows ecosystem, it's a great idea actually. You increase adoption, making it more attractive for devs to get into the app store...and you grow from there.

Does the update keep pieces of Windows 7/8 it hasn't changed? I'm guessing it keeps at least some personal settings or programs? Maybe getting an update to sync correctly with Vista would be too much extra work and headaches to bother.

It seems to me that it would transfer all your settings and stuff that you customized as well as programs you have installed. I am going to try this upgrade on a VM once it is released and see what happens... I think it will also keep the old windows install folder around on your HD if it works like the preview build updates.

I think those 3 guys said, "lets give them the OS for free and take a cut of all the sales on our store which is integrated into our OS."

Considering that most people run Windows because it came on their computer, and Microsoft gave it to the manufacturers at a very low cost per license, I'd say this is exactly what Microsoft is betting on. I hear about people making very good money on a good app for Android, so it will be interesting to see if the integration will help Microsoft do the same.

No, I distinctly remember them saying they wanted a for sure monthly fee with Windows 365. Apps bought occasionally with a one time cut won't do. :hmm:

I don't think everybody in the planet knows about this OPS stuff, only a few are savoy enough to do this, maybe 10% knows how to do it,the other 90% will just buy it.

So unless MS gives you something for free you don't care? OK.

Exact Bro; you want to know why! well i'll tell you why.
cause i have the most outstanding OPS in the world; UBUNTU14.04LTS and is all free, and it does everything Better than Win, for me;maybe for others it doesn't work same way!
you have to admit for a free OPS Linux doing all it does for people without paying any thing has to be the BEST, besides Linux works in any Hardware old, new,it just helps poor people that can't afford to buy a new PC. do i make any sense?

It works for Apple, why shouldn't it work for MS?

They're just trying to build a similar hardware/software eco system as Apple has.
