Windows 10 is awful

I just bought a brand new computer for myself and I'm already hating windows 10. It took me four hours to update everything just to be able to use it. Is there anyway for me to make it more like windows 7 or even 8? I tried disabling all the forced updates but it re-enables it by itself without asking permission? Also I'm sick of the adverts in the start menu.

Wait till you've uninstalled the same rubbish games that it keeps reinstalling over and over.

TBF it's a good OS that's been ruined by some stupid decisions.

No it's not a good os. It lags and stutters like crazy. I'm using my old circa 2010's win 7 laptop to watch netflix and it's much faster opening and closing windows. And it's only got a dual core ht i7 with 4 gigs ddr3.

I only have those sorts of problems with Win10 on an old netbook when it decides to do a bunch of stuff in the background without telling me or letting me stop it. Which I'd argue was a design decision rather than a flaw with the OS.

Still a pain in the arse either way.

runs perfect for me on 3 different systems, best home os they've put out
You must be the guy they designed it for then! It's a lot less user friendly if you aren't thst guy and want it to do things in a different way.

i've really had like 0 problems with it, only thing that i can think of that i wish i could do is have a bit more power to remove icons on start bar like camera, photos etc

Theres loads of things I'd change.

Forced installation of bloatware would be the first.
Opening things in Edge even when I've told it not to. (I've actually broken Edge so it's non functional to stop it doing that)
Having to do some things in the control panel and some things in the settings page when they are supposed to be the same thing. Plus they have wildly different UIs.

I could probably continue this all morning so I'll stop now!

The same is true for every modern-ish version of Windows, the historical exception being a given version when it was only about a month or two old. The same is true of Win10 1803. The people you should be annoyed with work for the manufacturer who didn't bother to update the OS before selling it to you, which again was a problem for older versions of Windows as well.

Is there anyway for me to make it more like windows 7 or even 8? I tried disabling all the forced updates but it re-enables it by itself without asking permission? Also I'm sick of the adverts in the start menu.

To fix your Start menu problem: www.classicshell.net
I normally do a custom install to just get the Start menu and that's it.

If you don't like security flaws being patched in your OS, then by all means try to force it not to. The only way Win10 is different in any regard to your points is that it makes it difficult to disable updating. I personally don't agree with this strategy, but then I disagree more strongly with the idea of not updating your OS at all.

My biggest problem with win 10 is the same reason why I loathe(and have loathed) apple products since grade school: Control. I have zero freaking control with modern oses(spelling?). Win 10 takes away so much control from the end user and gives it to microsoft that it's driving me crazy.

Years ago my company had a meltdown when our systems shutdown one after another for do the anniversary update. We were offline for two hours while windows decided to be a pain and update on us. Before that many of our critical workstations updated to windows 10 from windows 7 without permission, overnight and we lost so much data.

I'm just really sick of this anti user interface design philosophy plaguing modern tech.

The only usable version of W10 is Enterprise LTSB (ie, the decr*pified version minus all the Cortana, App Store, advert, forced update, watered down "Pro" Group Policy, etc junk). Of course it's not available to consumers, so instead of gaining more Windows 7 users by perhaps marketing a W10 Ultimate consumer version that allows power users to strip it down to same "almost Windows 7" LTSB level, instead half the market just remains on Windows 7...

I have pro at work and on my general purpose PC at home and no problems. Seems to be very stable, stumped me about bios access for a while lol.

Ok, so you bought a brand new computer but never told us the specs on it. Maybe that's why it took 4 hours to update everything?

I'm no fan of Windows at all and I'm thinking that this guy brought a low end computer that the OEM installed a bunch of their own bloatware on top of what Win10 already has.

Or an xBook with only 2GB of RAM.

That is not bad for Windows, how long did it take for you to apply the updates?
30 minutes is about right and includes updates when I do it. I always make and keep a stick with the latest version. Install to SSD and I have it to desktop in less than 15 minutes. Updates which included cumulative update for 1803 and a few others take the rest of the time.

Win 10 serves all of my family's purposes very well, and I right click to get to most things, including to turn the PC off or restart. Hence, rarely see the start menu being complained about. And after changing the default apps Edge was the default for, have yet to have it utilized.

I am ambivalent to the telemetry and other things that trigger people. I have no issues with getting at things I want like a command prompt, setting, or service.

The comment about system specs was mine as well. Probably has slow hdd in it.

Yep a 5400 RPM HDD with a low amount of memory will make for a very slow computer.

Why so hostile? My brand new pc has a ryzen 1700x, gtx1060 and 8gigs of ram. And it's still sluggish. Just now as I booted it up today it took me 20 minutes to 'get windows ready.' What did it install and why did it take so long? What's the point of keeping me locked out of my computer so often and for so long. I dont play games or do any processing work. I just watch netflix and wanted something to last me a while, because my old laptop is dying.

Did you install the amd drivers? I built my mom a 1600x a few months ago and its a rocket with an nvme ssd boot drive.

you dont play games yet you got a 1060 gtx???

i understand about future proofing with a 1700x, i even get it with the 8gb of ram.... but the 1060 gtx for a non gamer im sort of lost on.

You could of saved yourself about 100 dollars getting a 1050 or a 1030, also be future proof'd and put the savings into a nvme drive which may have helped you with latency and speed, so your system didnt feel so sluggish.

What HDD are you using? or are you on a SSD?
Ive installed w10 on core 2 duo's with 4gb of ram, built in onboard gpu, but with a SSD, and they were all pretty snappy after all the updates were done.

Also updates are large depending on what build your install is on.
And that is at the mercy of your internet / wifi / network, so you cant really blame w10 on that.

Its just you came in here ranting about w10 without telling us much, that is why people are trying to call you out.

But then again i am a gamer... i also have a 960 PRO /w an i9 and w10 is installed using a UEFI boot.
It gets me into the welcome screen from power on in about 7 seconds from cold boot, so this is why everyone here is saying YMMV based on hardware.
