Ugh. I wonder how hard it would be to make a binary patch to make shutdown.exe treat /sg as /s

Once upon a time in the days of Windows 2000, I used to download Windows updates manually and add them to a script that would silently install them so next time I reinstalled I wouldn't have to go through a multitude of updates and I wanted to keep control over what and when updates would be installed.

Admittedly I can't remember whether Win2k was the first to have full auto install updates as an option or whether semi-auto was the order of the day (was it the first to have the Windows Update agent, and/or with just a notifier to tell you that updates were available?), but anyway.

If I could be bothered, I'd go on to Windows 10 and do the same thing. Instead I've been using Lubuntu as my primary OS for about a month now, and Windows is relegated to the role of gaming only. I just have the feeling that Windows for example is heading in a direction that's not compatible with the way I want to use my computer. I avoided the free Windows 10 upgrade because in my experience in-place MS OS upgrading wasn't a great idea, let alone forced OS full-auto forced upgrading twice a year for that lovely feeling of "you thought you had profitable work to do today? Nah, you may have to reinstall your OS instead because we say so" and "you used to use this software. Surprise! Now you can't".

I had gotten in the habit of closing all of my windows anyway, but I just tried it in Windows 10 (with that option turned off), and it didn't open any of the many windows I had open before restarting. Maybe it's fixed now?

Mine still reopens everything.

Even the stuff that wont reopen and errors out because I'm using a remote desktop. It still tries to run it though. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I. RESTART.

Whenever I get a new computer from x (Dell, HP, etc), the first thing I do is run Windows updates until there aren't any more. I have a feeling that:
1. The OP isn't checking these, and
2. The image shipped on his computer may be outdated, requiring a longer update process than most (one experience he mentioned sounded like one of the new versions on 10 being installed).

That sure explains a lot.

I support all of the Windows desktop OS's including some legacy systems still running on Win2k.

Biggest advantage of Win10 over Win7 is Win10 is significantly more efficient and quicker when it comes to portables. No question that Win10 on a laptop or tablet is more productive than Win7 for too many reasons to list.

For desktop users though Win 7 is simply more intuitive and less garbaged down by all those moronic and redundant tiled interfaces that serve no purpose. Microsoft should have given you a choice of interfaces with Win8x / 10. Apps assigned to the flyout dissappear for no reason forcing you to hop through app search menus and other trash. We run operating systems to run apps, not the other way around.

Also, corporate / business users have no need for all that home group, networking gunk.

Well redacted it. I've had enough of windows 10 redacted. I got my pc checked out by the dell repair tech when he came to service our workstations and he said there was nothing wrong with my computer. I've decided to install windows 7 on an ssd. Took me a while because my pc doesn't have ps/2 slots so I had to find so many drivers and workarounds. I'm happy to say that windows 7 exceeds my expectations.

Also microsoft can redacted because I've had to download a user patch to get windows 7 to update on my ryzen system.

We don't allow any profanity

You gotta be kidding me. So windows 10 decides to redactedme one last time. I boot in to upload my files to dropbox and windows 10 goes update crazy. Stops me from doing any work and keeps me in the updating windows screen for hours.

redactedmicrosoft. I will never buy another of your products ever again. My kids aint ever gonna have an xbox.

Looks like you're doubling down on the profanity after a mod warning.

Why so hostile? My brand new pc has a ryzen 1700x, gtx1060 and 8gigs of ram. And it's still sluggish. Just now as I booted it up today it took me 20 minutes to 'get windows ready.' What did it install and why did it take so long? What's the point of keeping me locked out of my computer so often and for so long. I dont play games or do any processing work. I just watch netflix and wanted something to last me a while, because my old laptop is dying.

I have an overclocked Ryzen 1400 with 16gb and an RX580 running on a PNY XLR8 480gb SSD. It absolutely flies. Windows 10 boots in about 5 seconds (7 seconds from power on), and regular windows updates take no more than 10 minutes. The 1803 update took around 20-25. When I got the PC at first, though, it was running on a 1tb 5400 RPM platter drive and it was more sluggish than a slug covered in salt.

That's probably your problem OP. Prebuilt PCs cut corners on storage.

Edit: Hmm, never mind. Dude probably is banned (or never coming back at least) and it's due to his own incompetence.

And people ask why I build my own computers and why I'm so picky about the hardware I use.
Well, I bought this PC because at the time, just trying to get an AMD RX580 would've cost more than the whole PC. I just swapped out the HDD with the SSD I already had from my old laptop.

Building this machine from scratch would've cost around $1100, and I paid about $650 for it.
Got an MSI Bazooka B350M motherboard, AMD Ryzen 1400, MSI RX580 Armor OC 4gb, and G.Skill 8gb DDR3 (replaced with Corsair Vengeance RGB), Phanteks Eclipse P400s tempered glass with RGB lighting, and an EVGA 80+ 500w PSU. All pretty much stuff (except the PSU, would've picked a SeaSonic unit) I would've picked anyway.

What kind storage you got with it?

What kind storage you got with it?

You mean what drive it came with? A 1tb Western Digital 5400 RPM spinner. I cloned it to a 480gb SATA SSD that was previously in my gaming laptop. That old drive is in a box in storage now. I have a 1tb 7200rpm laptop drive in as extra storage.
