Has MS ever clarified what "supported lifetime of the device" means? I'm not sure if I'm gonna bother downloading/upgrading if 2 years down the road my supposed "free" license turns into being conned into upgrading into a future pay wall.

I'm worried when I see remarks like this on MS's own forums:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...0/9a6d4979-6057-4b66-9a0d-2cf15aa43f91?auth=1

Microsoft will be requiring you to pay ongoing fees for security updates and patches. Furthermore, if your decide to try to use your device without paying for the updates, your device will be programmed to take you to a block screen so you won't be able to access any of your personal files, or use your machine at all.
After the first year you'll receive a notification which reads, "Your device has reached the end of its support period. If you would like to renew your support license go to www.microsoft.com/...."

Microsoft has never clearly stated in any of their press releases that they will not be doing this. Every single press release has been nebulous double-speak designed to avoid declaring that this is exactly what they intend to do, and exactly what Microsoft executives have told shareholders when discussing wanting to turn Windows 10 from a product into an on-going service.

Your device will be supported for the duration of the support phase, and the duration of the support phase is determined by the duration of the support license that you purchase, not the planned lifetime of product updates.

More importantly, nobody took the time to correct this person.

Probably because MS is already putting a lot of info out there that as long as you remain up to date (akin to installing the last service pack) you'll be supported. I also see LTSB ISOs on MSDN.

The answers forum is useless. Don't trust anything you read there unless it's directly from a MS engineer. The moderators are not always good sources of info, and there are several prolific posters who routinely post rumor-based opinions as if they were facts.

It's a shame that MS doesn't take a more active role in answering important questions on their own fourm. So much FUD could be avoided.

If I don't like Windows 10 will I be able to downgrade back to Windows 7 using the same license key? Either way, I think I'm gonna wait until near the deadline for the free upgrade before I make my move and let others be the beta testers for a new OS. Its likely to be a couple years before any PC games start using DX12, which is about the only reason I'm considering the upgrade, and also the potential of the OS being a little faster than W7.

No you can't use the 10 key for 7 so if you want to clean install 7 in the future extract the key now and put it away. I think that 8.1 and 10 are both better than 7 after you install classic shell and 8gadgetpack. You get the better OS with the look and feel of 7 which is a win win situation to me.
