Question Windows 10 Pro, Windows 11 and the Z790 chipset: my plan to build my next computer

Let me emphasize -- I have no hardware failures or problems. Windows 10 Pro is serving my needs perfectly. I am attempting to scale back the number of working computers in my home which require maintenance and configuration as a routine. But I am making progress with my hardware hoarding and OCD computer "interest". I replaced my HTPC AND my home file server with a single "Media PC and synching backup server". This latest "build" can be turned off for periods of time, unless I want to watch a recorded movie from my collection, or I feel a need to synch files.

Thus, I have removed a net number of one (1) computer in the house. Last year, I got rid of two of them. This is especially important, because we've gone from three users to one user in the last six years. Moms stopped using her system in 2017, and my brother died in January 2022. So I'm the only "user" left in the house. Moms is still very much alive, but she consumes a hefty amount of my time as her caregiver. So I'm not so keen anymore about building a new computer. I give time to such projects. I research the parts options, plan the building activity and give my creations a couple months in testing before I make them fully operational on a day-to-day basis.

I still figure I need to keep current without being a total lemming and slave to new hardware releases and newer versions of the OS and software.

So here it is. I'm tentatively planning to build around a high-end ASUS Z790 motherboard, probably for either an i7-12700 or i7-13700 processor. I really didn't want to do this: I'm getting old, and -- as I said -- other things are consuming my time. I have a close friend who is a "mainstreamer", and whose computer is malfunctioning and giving him trouble. I had been offering advice, but I certainly know he does not want to build a system. We were both looking at high-end Dell XPS, Precision or Optiplex systems, and my friend took the plunge to spend about $1,700 on his new high-end system. I'm not jealous or anything: I could easily order up a Dell or maybe an Acer with a $2,200 price-tag.

This would have been the first OEM I will have purchased since 1994. But after assessing my friend's acquisition or what it might mean to me, I came up with a ball-park estimate for a high-end ASUS motherboard, the i7-13700K, and 64 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM. Add in a 1TB HK Hynix P41 NVME for ~ $100 and the CPU heatpipe cooler, and I'm looking at an outlay of about $1,400. I have all the other parts I would need. I think I will have more expansion and modification options using my own case and other parts. But right now, I don't want to deal with the Win 11 OS and software decisions I may need to make with it.

Win 11 was released around October, 2021, and the Z790 chipset arrived the next year. As I need to eventually face the learning curve with Win 11, I've tentatively decided to build the new system with an initial installation of Windows 10 Pro. I have obtained a retail-box-in-shrink-wrap "new" for about $65. Nor does the money really matter in that regard, either. I can upgrade to Win 11 at some future time, but I need to make my next system-build "perfect" and "reliable", and i don't want to face the other issues I mentioned until later.

Is there any reason -- any at all -- that a Win 10 Pro installation will not work as well on a Z790 system?

No.

Why are you diving into a z790 though? You could shave more money off the price by going z690 as it works with both CPU options with a uefi update. Asus is junky at this point if you read about their issues with uefi and caps in reverse polarity.

If you want true power for a server get away from windows completely and use Linux instead. It will run cooler and not need as much maintenance.

Am uplift of the board, CPU, and cooler would be less than $500. If you really want to deal with DDR 5 then maybe a bit more but, you would need 6000mhz chips to beat DDR 4 in terms of speed. Not that anything you're doing needs that much speed anyway. Running on Linux though you only need 4gb of ram under load.

I would just convert what you have to Linux and pocket the cash. There's no real use case for you to dump money into a new system build.

Only this - that the new "thread director" feature of 12th-gen/13th-gen CPUs that have both P and E cores, really strongly "recommends" Windows 11 for proper performance characteristics.

All good advice here, and I can at least boast of not being in a hurry to either waste money or make suboptimal choices.

Tech Junky points out the practical reality that the performance difference between need and want may be insignificant, while the price difference may be a significant saving. I'm not a devoted gamer anymore, either.

mxnerd suggests a means to resolve the OS learning curve, just as we did with Classic Shell. Indeed, Classic Shell updated itself when I made my laptop a Win 11 system, but it still leaves me a bit hesitant and confused. I should jump on my laptop, uninstall Classic Shell and then install Open Shell Menu to see what it's like.

Meanwhile, Virtual Larry explains the minor nature of what is lost or gained between the OS versions.

I think sorting, purging and discarding from my burgeoning cyber-parts lockers is the priority over the next few months. I now have a media and music juke-box that doesn't need to run all the time, and my old quad-cores are still fast for my personal needs. I'm going to get rid of a BenQ HD gaming monitor on my desk -- still good enough to put in storage for whatever it might be used for later.

Hi BD, I'm approaching 78 and two days ago I built a new system with Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX D4 and i7-12700K. Some of the stuff was reused from a Jan 2021 build. I got the CPU from Amazon for $252 and the MB from Micro Center for $244.99. I really looked at board features and found this Gigabyte board to offer a great value for the money. Same goes for the i7. I didn't want any less of a CPU as I was coming from an i9. Since I already had 32GB of good DDR4 RAM, I didn't want to spend the extra money on DDR5. Anyway, good luck with the build!

UPDATE: I forgot to mention Win 11 - I upgraded to it as soon as it was available for download and love it!! One feature that I use all the time is having multiple pages on the screen, instead of having multiple monitors. It was suppose to work on prior versions of Windows, but just never did. It is really easy to use in Win 11. On the new build I actually bought a gray-market version of Win 11 Pro.

It sounds good -- your new system. I just have a lot on my plate right now -- getting a contractor to do some household repairs sounds like less of a disruption than it may actually be. Spending $9,000 on those repairs has focused my attention more than my new computer intentions. If I were to take your cue and decide to go forward on a new build, it's not something I'd want to take on until much later in the year.

I just spent very close to that much to redo our shower in a 6 year old house. The original shower pan was installed improperly and there was no way to fix it without a complete rebuild. So, I can feel your pain!
